5 dogs in Crete were hung together by some "people" on 14-05-2009. The members of the animal fair organization and specifically their president mrs Maria Papadaki went to a farm one kilometer outside of the town. What they saw was horrible. 4 of the dogs were hung in an olive tree and another right across them. How are you gonna find them mr minister???? A vet checked out the situation and said it took these dogs up to 8 hours to die - look at their poor faces - agony - pain - arrest these murderers!

Letter to the mayor of Sitia.Copy and email to TITLE: ΕΙΔΕΧΘΕΣ ΕΓΚΛΗΜΑ

His Site (also in english):

As tourist season approaches so does the threat of death to the beautiful dogs and cats in Greece. The authorities put out arsenic to "cleanse the streets" of Greece so the tourists will not see the strays. If the municipalities had shelters for these homeless animals they would not have to murder them - if the authorities would make an effort to find homes for these strays there would be no need for the poison and if they would spay and neuter the animals - - no need for the poison. What is so complicated here? Why must Greece take the easy and heartless way out of this situation? Tourists - know your money is going to the people that beat, poison and murder these animals - until they do what is humane - shelter, rehome, spay and neuter - stay away! I would not want this on my conscious!

Let the Greek authorities know this is unacceptable! Write to the Greek tourism complaint department at:
and tell them you will not visit Greece until shelters are built, animals are taken in and cared for, and laws protecting the animals are enforced. Thank you!

Remember Greece is only as beautiful as it's animals - without the beautiful animals of Greece there is no Greece!

To the people around the world that are thinking about visiting Greece, please be advised that the following crimes against the animals do take place, some of them on a regular basis, be forewarned that you will see some of the most heart wrenching sights of abused animals, know that hundreds of people wrote on this site and the petition site that “they spent their entire vacation feeding, bathing, giving medical assistance and rescuing the animals of Greece. They say they refuse to ever return because of what they saw, they did not carry home memories of a beautiful ocean or photos of magnificent beaches, instead they carried home the horrific memories of the dying animals of Greece and the rude and abusive contacts they had with the locals of Greece that they tried to talk to about the treatment of the animals.” Knowing this, if you still intend to visit Greece leave your heart at home.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR SIGNING THE PETITION -PEOPLE ARE SIGNING INCORRECTLY AND THEIR NAMES ARE NOT REGISTERING - you must fill out the registration and click on SIGN, THEN... a proof will come up for you to be sure it is what you wrote and it will again say SIGN , YOU MUST CLICK ON THE SIGN AGAIN or it will not register, that is why there are so few signatures on the petition, you have to click on "sign" in two places - thank you.

These are actual postings from people livng in Greece as well as tourists:
>January 2009 – over 20 dogs poisoned to death in Ioannina
>Glika Nera-Attica, dog wired to car and dragged to his death
>Crete: massive abuse, dog put on a stick and bbq’d alive, 2 others dragged to death behind a car, another hit by a car breaking his leg, he went 8 days in town with the bone sticking out of his leg and no one helped him, by the time someone did it was too late to save his leg,
>Pikerill – mass poisonings
> Ravala – mass poisonings
>Poros – dog (Leo) doused with acid, burnt horribly
>A German Shepherd had his mouth wired shut so he would die a slow, agonizing death, he was rescued in time
>Puppies clubbed to death
>Puppies set on fire
>Another shepherd had a firecracker thrown in her face, blinding her, she lost both front legs and was euthenized
>Dog had his entire snout sliced off with an ax
> Dogs hanged
>Dogs left to die in cess pits and rubbish pits
>Tortured with hot cooking oil
>Bleach poured down their throats
>Starvation – suffocations - shootings
>Dogs/cats burnt with acid - eyes gouged out
>Dogs chained without food or water in hot sun their entire life, chains embedded into their necks
>Dogs mutilated, tails & ears chopped off, limbs axed off
>Donkeys beat because they cannot walk any further or carry any more weight on their back
>Donkeys left out in the sun without water or food to die a slow, agonizing death
>Dogs used as scarecrows, chained on farms in sun without water or food
>Dogs run over and left to rot in the streets
>Carriage horses that look like skeletons with feet/hooves overgrown
>Feb 09 in Koskinou on Rhodes – a dog was found with his hind legs chained together - his front legs and neck were chained with an iron rod and he was chained to a tree, he had been there 4-5 days, the bones in his legs were exposed, he was rescued and is being treated, his name is Benzamin (a collie) needs a home!

Photos of many of these precious victims are on this site – take a look – remember all of these dogs suffered horribly, very few survive, no one is punished for these crimes, there are witnesses and they either are afraid to come forward or just don’t care. The authorities do nothing, in some cases it is the authorities that authorize the poisonings. None of the animal protection laws are enforced, each day is a last day for so many of the animals of Greece. So again, if you still choose to visit Greece – leave your heart at home!

To the Government of Greece

It is time for the Greek government to stand up and fight for the rights of the animals of Greece. You are part of the European Union! Abide by it's laws and start punishing those that commit crimes against the animals of Greece. It is time to take action against those that abuse and murder the animals of Greece. It is time that Greece acknowledges that animal abuse has become a national embarrassment – people around the world have made a statement – they will not visit the Islands of Greece until Greece puts an end to these crimes against their animals. It is time shelters were built with medical facilities to take care of the sick and injured animals, spay and neutering of animals is a must to control the over-population, adoption agencies must be formed to find homes for the thousands of homeless animals. And most importantly – educate your people as most of them are the ones committing these crimes, teaching their children that dogs are dirty and worthless – encouraging torture of these animals, this is unacceptable behavior and must be stopped. There are some that are volunteering their time, giving of their personal funds to help the animals the best they can but they cannot do this alone, they are ridiculed by the majority of people that continue to abuse the animals but I do want to commend these people for their continued efforts and encourage others to join them in saving these animals.

There is no way, no how I could ever go to such a place because without a doubt I would end up in prison. Seeing something like that, there is no way I could be able to turn my back. Such evil, wretched humans in this world. Will never understand how they can become so evil, cruel and heartless. I had to get up and go and hug my dogs and walk away from this for a few minutes before I could even come back and comment. I 100% thank each and every one in Crete who are doing what they can for these poor animals. Will send emails, hoping they will go through. Thank you Simone.

2 friends of mine just returned from Greece. They were shocked of all the streetdogs there, who are often in seriously bad conditions.
I warned them before they went. They are now in the process of adopting a dog from a Greece shelter. It seems to be a trend, adopting animals from other countries.I have mixed feelings about this.Offcourse,it's super that a greece street/shelter dog gets a loving home. But it doesn't fix the problem there.Greece needs laws agaisnt this, they need more shelters,Spay and neuter laws, more education.
Shelters in own countries are also full of lovely animals who are waiting for a new home

I've done everything here, Simone.

My apologies to anyone from Greece here but I have never had any interest in going there although I carry the name Apollo for the Sun God Apollo-I am sure even he is embarrassed for the way animals are treated there.

Signed and forwarded the petition Simone. This is horrendous. Greece needs to feel for animals almost like they do for their own blood. Try to hurt them and see what happends!

Hang the men who hung the dogs~~simple as that. These subhuman pieces of crap do not deserve to live in this world. I hope they burn in hell for eternity and while they're burning, I hope they are hanging by their necks, but still alive, so they will feel for eternity the pain and suffering they caused those poor, precious animals to endure.
