Will We Only Save the Cute?

Can we muster the will to save endangered species that aren't cute and cuddly? It's hardly an abstract question. IUCN -- The World Conservation Union -- has more than 1,200 species on its Red List. These animals and plants are, to varying degrees, on

Well I think Tuna are cute, but then I think snakes are cute. I think perhaps we go for cute and cuddly more because most of them are mammals like us and they feel nice. I'm facinated by all forms forms of life, even lower forms of life such as bacteria, viruses and whalers.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me all Gods creatures are beautiful, equal in their own rights and each deserving to be protected.TY Simone.

The European Union in general and my country France in particular, are asking for a total ban of bluefin tuna fishing for as long as needed until the species may be preserved from extinction. Courageous decision, which of course some nations will not like, such as Japan... but also our local fishers, which are of course protesting because this ban would mean "lose their job". But these fishers are so short-sighted... if there's no more tuna in the sea in 10 or 15 years, they'll go bankrupt anyway. So, what is the best solution? Stop for a while, or "let's catch the whole population of bluefin tuna, while there's some left, no matter what happens next because I'll be too old to fish anyway" ?

All animals should be protected regardless of whether or not they conform to our standards of beauty.
Because an animal doesn't fit into our box of what's beautiful is no reason to not protect them and value their lives.
Fish are not the only ones pushed aside unfortunately though. Chickens, turkeys ,and other birds, are often unfairly thought of as " stupid" or " unattractive" too and then even animals that are more often thought of as cute such as pigs and cows are not saved from horrendeous , pain riddled lives.
Some other countries not only subject the usual farm animals to pain and death but include dogs , cats , and horses as well - and you have to wonder why. Why do we feel it is alright to kill another living being that feels pain and is every bit as alive and worthy of a life exempt of suffering as we are? Very much of the way we treat animals lie within the way we have grown up viewing them and how other people treat them and if we are used to chaining our dog outside we'll not likely see anything wrong with doing that even though we ourselves would find it terribley wrong for it to be done to ourselves. Would we kill and eat or make leather from or scalp and make human hair fringes and coats from other humans? No, we wouldn't. It would be wrong. But wrong is wrong and if it is wrong to do to another person or you personally wouldn't want it to be done to you then it is not right to inflict upon an animal.

"If all the beasts were gone, man would die from loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beast, happens to the man. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth, befalls the sons of earth." Chief Seattle

Every life has a purpose and who is to say what animals are cute and which are not. If we allow this, then eventually they will want to extend this to humans. All animals are individuals and they are entitled and they deserve an opportunity to live.

Who is the judge of what is cute or ugly, or who should be saved or not? And it is just that...a judgement based on faulty misperceptions, fear or ignorance. A tiger in its natural habitat is not dangerous to me. If I pitch a tent in his backyard....all of a sudden he's dangerous. As we strip more and more of land away from animals such as bears then they become dangerous. All living creatures have a right to life and we should protect all animals including their jungles, oceans and rainforests.

ALL Living creatures have individual personalities...I really wish more people would take the time to enjoy Nature and observe. It brings Peace, Understanding, and awareness of what is really truly and important in our lives.

Yes, all creatures have a place in nature's plan, although I haven't figured out what it could be with some of them; ticks and fleas for instance, but even they are food for something I'm sure.
Thanks Simone.

Tout les animaux et plantes, domestiques ou non, ont leur droit de vivre sur notre planète!
Ils font partie de l'écosystème! Sans eux : plus de vie sur Terre!!!!!!

I've heard many people point out that most of the species that ever lived are already extinct and questioning why we should intervene in this process, but if we have the means, why shouldn't we save whatever we can?

If we have the technology for moronic cosmetic surgeries or every imaginable gadget under the sun, we need to take more steps to use our brainpower to develop solutions to life's problems so that we can make positive changes instead of just making a few people mindlessly happy.
