An elephant in a Shrine Circus in Pennsylvania kicked and killed his trainer. Elephants in circuses suffer from brutal training and treatment, are forced to spend hundreds of hours in small travelling containers, and are deprived of everything

The success of Cirque Du Soleil proves that a circus without animals can be successful. Ban all circuses featuring animals.

This is so tragic to me, but I just don't understand why people are so shocked that things like this happen when they take a wild animal, cage it, and make it do their will. When will we learn that we are totally destructive and bring calamity upon ourselves.

Signed and noted. I received a call last week from the Shriners asking for a donation to send children to the Circus, I told the person that I wouldn't donate because I don't like the way the animals are treated and hung up.

How many times does this have to happen before mankind learns we do not control wildlfe? I have had nothing to do with the Shriners because of their use/abuse of animals. And to really show their ignorance, after one of their own is killed -- they decided "the show must go on" -- the money must come in. They had a moment of silence for the trainer! If they have so little respect for humans, it should not come as a surprise they mistreat the animals. They disgust me.

Subject: Special request

"There is no creature among all the Beasts of the world which hath so great and ample demonstration of the power and wisedome of almighty God as the elephant."

~ Edward Topsell; The Historie of Foure-Footed Beastes, London 1658 ~

Sirs,

It is my opinion that elephants in circuses suffer from brutal training and treatment, are forced to spend hundreds of hours in small travelling containers, and are deprived of everything instinctual to their nature. These are only a few of my objections. I am asking that you release ALL elephants from your circus programs and make sure that they are placed into sanctuaries where they will be well-cared for as they live out the remainder of their lives. Circuses are NO place for elephants! Might I suggest that you go for the positive publicity this will bring, rather than risk a marred reputation and the speedy downfall of an animal act that is going extinct, as more and more people are recognizing animal cruelties like these and demanding that they STOP once and for all!

I write earnestly, that this letter expidites the process.

Thank you most graciously for your consideration towards this matter.

Here is the letter I just emailed to:

roger@shrinecircus.com, shrinepr@shrinenet.org

Subject: Thoughts on the death of an elephant trainer/groomer

Sirs:

The death of Andrew Anderton was no accident—it was a tragedy waiting to happen. Wild animals do not belong in captivity. For humans to think they have any right to take wild animals out of their natural habitats for human amusement is a grievous error of judgment. You take them from their homes and families, deprive them of all that is meaningful in their lives, chain them, beat them, intimidate them, make them wear idiotic costumes, force them to perform, and give them demeaning names such as Dumbo. The photo accompanying the news story clearly shows the bullhook being used as a visual cue of intimidation. In addition, the elephant wears “decorated” leg irons, as a further reminder that he is enslaved. It is no wonder humans die as a result of trying to control and tame wild animals. To rule such deaths “accidental” is to perpetuate your own arrogance in refusing to acknowledge the underlying cause: wild animals do not belong in captivity. Please stop exploiting animals in your circus. Thank you for reading my letter.

Sincerely,

Jan Weeks

The poor elephant is only reacting to the way he has been treated. He does not belong in the circus. He belongs back into nature. They are called wild animals because they belong out in the wild. Not in some stupid as a performer. And certaintly not to be abused.

This is not done an am not at all happy with the deeds done by their masters. They are cruel, i am happy and thankful for the people who actually offended them. They definitely deserves action and that too strict actions, i don't understand why do they need to do these types of deeds. I would say i don't want any entertainment for my own which is the result of so much cruelty to these animals which cant even speak for their protection.

Thank you, Simone. So many of us are distressed as here over the entire zoo/circus debacle around the world. The Ringling Brothers along with other circus groups have been targeted especially hard with organized demonstrations via the likes of PETA and IDA as nearby this past year. I live in Chicago where this horror takes place and it is so upsetting to see families enticed by television ads to take the children for a good time. I am older and will say that I grew up during the time when so sadly there was no awareness of this misfortune or animal suffering as we fight to eradicate today. I always appreciate everything that you bring to all here on Care2.

Simone, thank you for the article. It is sad to say that most folks have been aware of the mistreatment of these incredibly intelligent animals for years. I have never been to a circus or show due to this fact, never taken my child to one, and always have discouraged anyone I knew from going to a show. All Circuses should absolutely be banned as Sherrie stated above. Thank you again Simone. Signed and noted. And I will email the references you gave.

Posted: When we know better, we do better. You know better, so it’s time for change! People are no longer willing to see animals used and abused to entertain us! Allow the elephants to go to sanctuary, where they can travel the land, roll in the mud and enjoy the rest of their years on earth. Do the right thing.

I would like to voice my outrage over all animals kept in circuses! Elephants because of their size are especially vulnerable! Retire all circus animals to a life of freedom and care, given by the very people who used, abused and made money off them for so many years! It should be the law now! Support Cirque De Soleil and other entertainment like them, where no animals are used, only people, who can make their demands themselves!

Help protest the circuses in your state when possible. Some people and parents are ignorant to what really happens to circus animals and it's our duty as animal activists to take a stand and do something, not just complain about it. Create a voice for these animals that are suffering.
