Not too long ago, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) stepped in it something big, when they actually polled their audience on the question of whether it was OK to execute gay people. The media powerhouse defended the poll at first, saying that

This is just too hateful and stupid. I can't believe there are still witch hunts and raging homophobics.
I find it hard to believe that BBC would stoop to this level of hate speech. Will forward to FB for my dears.

The BBC is one of the most biggoted organisations and staffed by selfrighteous idiots. I'll say the only thing I can in their defence and that is that they typically target everyone. Today they will host a poll like this against gay people and tomorrow they will host one asking if the inquisition should be brought back to persecute religious groups and burn them at the stake. I write and complain frequently about their lack of comon sense and their lack of good taste.

Please remember that every gay person has an extended family that is hurt every time a gay person is harmed. Even for those who genuinely believe that being gay deserves the death penalty (hopefully very few) it is still deeply wrong to harm their innocent families.

Much as I object to the criminalisation of gays, I'm surprised to see so many advocates of freedom of expression prepared to demand censorship of the press. Most of these posts come from the USA...First Amendment anybody?
What's happening in the's called news. What's the general view of people involved...take a poll. What kind of extremists exist, and what kind of dangerous ideas are they pushing...we need to know.
You have to let light into the dark to see what lurks there.

Noted and signed. Wrong "Rosemary with Marvin helping." The Christian Trinty of Gods apparently regulated the wealthy of imagined nobility to hell when proclaiming that the rich had as much chance going to heaven as a camel going through the eye of a needle. We should at least hold the Millionaire commentators of Christiancraft to their own beliefs especially when in obvious blaspehmy of the teachings of Jesus Christ. I'm against the death penalty for the simple reason that innocent defendants have been convicted and executed. Therefore, such reprobate commentors should be charged with treason, tried and, if conviced, sentenced to life. Just as falsely yelling fire" in a crowed theater is not protected under the First Amendment neither is spouting inneuendeo, insinuation and outright lies about a minority class of citizens solely to play on the prejudices and fears of ignorant voters for political purposes. The Fox hirelings of the Corporatecrafters are about as souless as the media can get. Such designed misinformation should and must be a crime to hold the hireling accountable for their reprobatehood.

Richard S., the US Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that free speech is not absolute. Exceptions to First Amendment protections include defamation, causing panic, fighting words, incitement to crime, sedition and obscenity. Clearly calling for the extermination of the gay population is calling for genocide, a crime internationally, so that is not protected speech. Glenn Beck told US troops to "remember their oath" and "do their duty" and overthrow the US government. That is clearly sedition, a crime usually prosecuted, and so is not protected speech. We have some people called "birthers" who claim President Obama was not born in the US, refering to him as a "Kenyan". That's defamation ("publication of a statement of alleged fact which is false and which harms the reputation of another person") and so that is not protected speech either. Of course, all of this applies to the US only.

If we're going to go around asking whom it should be allowed to execute, I think ignorant, narrow minded mean spirited fundamentalist religious lunatics (of ALL faiths) should be considered for extermination. Seems to me that the existence of such mentally defective creatures as they (fundamentalists) is pretty close to being proof of God's non-existence. ...I mean, if THAT's the best that he can do, then he's pretty pathetic as a supreme creator-being, now idn't he?

Accusing children of "sorcery" and vilifying homosexuals....Scapegoating is used to keep the populus from focusing on the corruption and of their leaders and staging a revolt. It's the same political slight-of-hand Conservatives try to perform here. First, they have to get people whipped into a frenzy over meaningless bullshit or cultivate hatred or fear of a common enemy (gays, Mexicans, Black Presidents, scary socialist Liberals) etc. The people won't realize that the very forces who create the fear (and then promote themselves as the entity that can "fix"it) are weakening them into virtual serfdom, and then expect to be haled as heroes for the privilege. So when Ugandan leaders claim that 7 yr. old sorcerers and homosexuals are responsible for all their country's no attention to that man behind the curtain. (It's just a Fox News commentator, showing them how it's done).

There's nothing wrong with any poll. It's much easier to fight unjust societal attitudes if we don't know what people believe and think and what percentage of the population believes what.

I do think the BBC giving a forum to the commentator, however, was foolish. He, like anyone else, has a right to free speech; however, the BBC doesn't have to provide the forum for that free speech.

While never being able to condone gay behaviour, I think asking for their elimination a bit far-fetched. Each person has a right to his/her personal choice, and if that choice is not thrust into our faces I see no problem. Indeed, it seems the witch hunts are here again.

No one chooses to be gay. Gays are born gay. Being in favor of executing gays is as wicked as a person can get. Some people have to be careful, they might be in favor of executing their brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, fathers, mothers, grandfathers. You never know who might be gay!

Robert S, no one is calling for censorship in the media! All we are saying is that there are plenty of talking heads around to give all sides of any agrument, and them giving a radically hateful and ignorant sod free exposure that gives him the image of legitimacy is extraordinarily bad judgment on the part of the BBC.

Would you feel the same way if they had called the grand dragon of the KKK in to comment on a news piece about blacks?

No one is calling for censorship! We're calling for better judgment! Don't confuse the two!

Maybe, we can ship these fools to Mexico, along with the Arizonians. These homophobes make me wonder if the year is almost 2011.

Calling for executions, is not expressing an opinion. It is professing hatred and inciting violence. Hatred comes from within, so you know what that tells us about the hater. Who taught these people to hate themselves, so drastically?
