Animals were here long before man &
we came along in the billions & have taken
away far too much from all animals to
barely survive on!!!!!

Plant & protect Danny's trees for life in 2011.........

No, that's absurd. Animals are things and can't have rights.

Yes. It's about time we treated animals as sentient beings.

I'm quite sure that animals who were here before humans, would be much more likely to share and to get along! It is ridiculous the way we just keep pushing them out of their safety zones!

well, it wasn't too long ago that women were considered property and didn't have rights. So, I am not holding my breath that the human race has evolved enough to recognize that there is no real hierarchial life structure, that all species are equal.

Whether it is absurd or not I find quite irrelevant, animals need rights, any rights, every step to give animals a better deal in this world is a step in the right direction, Betty you are quite right to be sorry, and so you should be!

It appears that the votes are beginning to go in our favour, but still not tipping the scales.

No, that's absurd. Animals are things and can't have rights.

Yes. It's about time we treated animals as sentient beings.

Total votes 4366

Voted (Yes of course) and noted with thanks Simone.

Alison, I said nothing about any other rights as far as treatment and such. I also was not apologizing for my stance but I knew I would offend. What you consider irrelevant compared to what I find relevant don't meet. What can I say. I can be as dismissive as the next person if you like, or to be blunt, as yourself. Please don't take me to task as a child either, very presumptive of you, period. I am all for animal rights, but I concern myself firstly with human rights and education, which will lead to better things for ALL on this planet.

Betty, If you actually read my comment properly, you would see that I never said anything about you not wanting other rights for animals, I just said that this poll was not absurd, as any step for animals is step in the right direction, you obviously feel differently.

Alison, you are right there, my mistake. I do feel differently. I'd prefer to make sure all the homeless people in the world have a place to shelter them before giving property rights to animals. I still think the idea is absurd. The basic tenement for giving animals property rights is to "protect" them. Most places require some sort of identification, branding, tagging, licensing now to "protect" animals. How exactly would adding one more law help when what we have now doesn't always come thru? What makes you think property rights would?!?!?!? People who own animals now are already "GUARDIANS" and many legally. Let's just add more chaos to the whole thing. Makes perfect sense to me.

Personally I feel that animals have been given a really rough deal, this is not our world and we have no rights to own them or torture their lives for our own gain or in some cases, pleasure, so I would stand up for animals before people.

I know that many people may disagree with that statement, you included Betty, but I can't help it, I would protect an animal over a human any day, because a human understands why the world is the way it is, an animal doesn't know why people have chosen to be so cruel and treat them as if they do not matter, to me they do matter, so I will use my voice to help them in any way I can, even if it does seem absurd.

Alison, I understand your reasoning. However, we, as humans ARE part of this world and it is our world, or we would not be here. Nothing wrong with using your voice to help animals, they do get treated badly in many, many areas all over the world, they have no voices. I just prefer to help humans so that they feel more inclined, in future, to help too. I don't think I could stand looking at a child with no home or food and trying to explain why I helped the animal first. People don't always have voices either.

Humans are a PART of this world, but it is not OUR world, we are the most cruellest and selfish of all the Earth's species and have not just taken over, but have disregarded the rights of any other life form, the human race disgusts me and I am ashamed to be a part of it.

But as a part of it, I do have that voice, it is fortunate that we are all different so that we can fight for different things, which does make the field a little bit more even and allow all types of causes to be helped.

Again, some people may think I am terrible to say such a thing, but I couldn't look into the eyes of an animal, knowing that I chose to save a person over them. I would never run the risk of saving a future murderer, or a child molester, some people are just rotten to the core and are not in the best interest of the world to be saved, whereas an animal would never get that rotten, at the first sign of a 'bad hair day' the law would have the animal killed, but the child molester would be deemed 'rehabilitated' and then let lose so he can do it again. Could you look into the eyes of a father and explain why you saved a child who grew up to be the man who has now taken away his little girl's innocence?

OK, I am going off the point a little bit, I am not adverse to helping people, lol, I have helped people because it is not in my nature to watch suffering and just walk on by. I would like it if we were given the ability not to have to choose, the governments should give us the rights to help everyone who needs it, people and animals.

Many times on forums we often argue with each other about who should have more rights, there is nothing wrong with passion and fighting for what we believe in, but I wish that more people would target the governments and make them give us, 'the people' what we want in this world. Some might say "Well were do you propose we get the money to help everyone?" They have the money, they just use it on things that you wouldn't agree with, or at least our British government does.

Animals could be given rights to their native habitat, and their future survival. This could be a key to biodiversity and promoting a healthy ecosystem. Animals are sentient beings and deserve respect.
