Mares that have been successfully bred are sent to is what called "the line." "The Line" is a term referring to the series of stalls the mares are kept in for a period of 160-180 days. Usually from October - April. These stalls are 3 ½ ft. wide X 8ft

Conjugated equine estrogens (CEE) are not even necessary for hormone replacement therapy. There are synthetic alternatives widely available - I googled a bit and it seems that HRT used here (where I live) is usually based on synthetic estrogen and the market for products containing CEE is very small. You'd think that science was nowadays advanced enough to create a synthetic equivalent to basically every naturally occurring chemical in the world - so why the hell these mares are still tortured in the name of medicine? Or are the consumers so stupid they prefer "natural" hormones over synthetic, because, you know, natural is good?

My horse was a PMU foal. He was at a feedlot in Canada; I got him through the United Pegasus Foundation as a yearling. He traveled a long distance to get to me, and wasn't even halter-broke. That was almost 5 years ago, and he is the sweetest horse I've ever known!

Thank you for posting, and many above comments. Big pharma is not interested in your welfare, and certainly not the welfare of other species. Women are being duped into believing they need these drugs during menopause. Crap. Many women go through menopause just fine, and there are many alternatives available. Premarin is a disgusting and unnecessary drug, but I don't need to tell you that.

Noted and signed... thanks for the article... just makes me more happy I never took Premarin. It is terrible these poor mares have to endure this when there are synthetics that work as well or better than Premarin.

This one is new to me, it is absolutely disgraceful and I cannot believe that it is allowed. I would be interested to know if it happens in the UK as I don't think it would be permitted under our animal welfare laws, which is possibly why I am not familiar with it.

Signed and noted, thanks Simone.

Hidden Facts of Premarin- Secrets, Lies, And Greed
Menopause affects every woman, and doctors have treated the symptoms of menopause for nearly 60 years with a drug called Premarin, which has become the third most prescribed drug in the world (just behind Tylenol), bringing its single maker over one billion dollars per year.
However, the production of this drug has cost the lives of over a million horses.
