Signed & noted.

Sheriff Lutz mentioned that many of his officers are hunters, so I seriously doubt some of those involved in this massacre didnít enjoy gunning down these defenseless animals.

I am unable to understand why this person didn't work with other zoos and animal groups to try and tranquilise them so they could be captured and relocated. Particularly as many were apparently endangered animals. This is a tragedy and the owner should never have been allowed to have them. I suspect the Sheriff has been watching too may Westerns. I can understand needing to make sure that people didn't get into difficulty, but these animals have in the end been let down by everyone concerned. Just too horrible to be allowed to happen again and the laws obviously need to be changed regarding these private zoos.

The sheriff had NO other choice but to shoot the animals and shoot them quickly. If any of you took even the smallest amount of time to look into the circumstances he was facing you would realize that. He did in fact consult animal experts. They told him there was no way to tranquilize the animals safely and effectively in the situation he faced. Nightfall was approaching and the sheriff whose primary duty is to protect the citizens had to act and act quickly. Fortunately he did. He will not be "arrested" by the governor, who wouldn't have the authority anyway, since he committed no crime. He will like receive a commendation however.
The person who is really at fault here is DEAD. This petition might as well be targeted to him as it would have as much effect.

Karen Minton, Ohio state director for the The Humane Society of the United States, said of the sheriff's actions, "We think they did their job,"
As for the governor of Ohio from NBC affiliate WHIZ:
Governor John Kasich called Sheriff Matt Lutz Wednesday night to personally thank him for containing the dangerous animal situation in Muskingum County.

Kasich spokesman Rob Nichols tells WHIZ the Governor wanted to express his gratitude to the Sheriff and his deputies for performing extraordinarily well under extreme circumstances. The Governor will be inviting the Sheriff to the State House to formally thank him.

Nope don't think he will be arresting the sheriff.
This tragic situation was not caused by the sheriff and as I predicted he will be getting a COMMENDATION from the governor as he SHOULD.
My god people, dangerous animals were loose in a neighborhood. Get a little perspective.

Considering there were 56 or so animals running wild and nightfall approaching I do not see may other options that were available. Experts were consulted, and reports indicate the sheriff's actions were the only choice. The part about "close range" helps to insure a "kill shot" rather than a wound. As much as I deplore what happened, I don't see many other choices. The effort at this point should be directed toward getting the state of Ohio to pass meaningful laws to prevent the such incidents from ever happening again.

If it is true this sacrifice could have been avoided, it would seem poor judgment overruled mercy in this case, and justice is once again left wanting.

Too many people on the planet already . A lot of the animals must have forgotten how to hunt anyhow. Hanging around waiting for their usual dinner time. Must have been easy targets. So, who gets to take home the hides for show and tell?

I don't believe that this is a just cause. My heart breaks for those animals but I can't think of anything the sheriff could have done differently. He had to act to protect the public and it was not feasible to tranquilize dangerous animals when they couldn't see what they were hitting or if it was effective. Had it been possible, that is what would have been done.

Apparently, he couldn't pass up this opportunity to hunt big game without having to leave home. I still can't get that picture out of my head. All those beautiful, innocent animals slaughtered. What a disgrace.

Done - I mourn for these innocent animals. They were doomed from day one and the mob scene in the end was absolutely shocking and sickening. Laws need to be made and enforced to protect these magnificent creatures. Thank you Simone!

Ultimately it is the laws that need to be toughened up in order to prevent tragedies like this from even happening in the first place. It is too late now for all those poor animals. Such a disgrace!

Morris G. (18)

"All those beautiful, innocent animals slaughtered. What a disgrace." Yes they were innocent, but don't confuse innocent with safe. For example one of the last animals accounted for was a monkey they couldn't find. That is until they discovered it had been eaten by one of the other animals after they were released.
Can you imagine the danger to the children in the area if they had not taken this action while the animals were relatively in one area?

"Lutz seems to have some real problems with decision making, problem solving and, oh, basic human decency. I think his actions were criminal: Animal cruelty and reckless endangerment. He certainly doesn't need to be walking around with firearms and the authority to use them whenever he deems appropriate."
