In November, Israel became the latest country to outlaw the practice of declawing cats. The procedure is a painful one that has no medicinal benefit to cats and can permanently alter their behavior.

Signed! This is absolutely barbaric...This is not just removing the claw, this is removing the first knuckle, equivilant to the cutting off of one's finger,. Not to mention that at the least, 50% or more of these catsend up with massive psychological damage both physically (Their entire means of defense is gone as well as the excruciating pain they suffer after the sugery! If your so worried about your living room more than the well being of your living animal, then perhaps a cat is not for you. I have all Leather furniture and they do not scratch or claw on it at all. (10 years and still looks like it's right off the show room floor) So you may want to alter the type of furniture you have, rather than alter and damage your cat for life.

Every time I see this, I want to be sick at the barbarism of it. People would change their minds pretty damn fast about doing it to a cat if it was happening to them also.

If your precious furniture is more important than having a cat, don't have a cat. I've had damage to my furniture and sometimes my clothes and have lived to tell about it. I would never do this to my cats. I carefully trim their nails whenever they let me get away with it.
Why would I want to cut off the first joint of my friends fingers?

Disgusting humans - I once had a manager who 'declawed' her dogs!! Believe it or not, despite stringent pre-examination they were allowed to purchase a Siberian husky as well - so much for pre-qualification!!!

Anyone who does this to a cat should not own one. Getting their nails trimmed is one thing if you have an indoor cat but to declaw them is simply barbaric. It would be like someone pulling out all your fingernails.

Muriel S (53)
Saturday January 7, 2012, 1:17 pm
BNoted and signed. What if your nails were pulled out? It's the same as declawing a cat, but for people, we call that torture whereas for cats there is no name, although it hurts and it depresses the cat.

Noted and signed..............we found a small kitten(about 3 or 4 months old) that had been declawed on ALL four feet! We kept her inside because the feral cats or other cats in the neighborhood wouldn't leave her alone and she had sore paws and no way to defend herself! We kept her inside and "trained her to be and inside kitty" and she's never been outside since except to go to the vet. She is almost 16 yrs. old now but we can still tell that she misses her claws. Don't know what the people that did that to her were thinking but it was awful!

I've got a length of 8mm rope wrapped around my computer table leg for the cats to scratch on, except for Ginger, who prefers to sit on and scratch a sturdy cardboard box. He's sitting on and scratching it as I type this. I think he's showing off a bit.

"There are now 10 countries which have banned the declawing procedure. Israel has gone even farther by instituting a $20,000 fine for people who are found to be breaking the law. "

Jewish Law forbids the mutilation of ANY animal since ancient times! This is in Torah!

Thank you so much Simone for posting this! My husband and I (we met working at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary) have been working on banning declawing for many years. I have had letters to the editor printed in several local newspapers, and my husband spoke at a meeting of county commissioners asking for declaw legislation to be introduced (to know avail, despite his well-prepared presentation). Isn't it a no-brainer that amputating a living being's toes without medical cause is torture? I have never met a declawed cat that did not have behavioral problems (peeing on soft surfaces/ biting) or at least exhibit typical declawed cat psychological damage, reflected in their "personalities". Many declawed cats are relinquished to shelters for these reasons. I know this from 13 years of cat shelter experience.

Sorry- that should be "to no avail". Too many thoughts racing through my brain of all the pain and suffering I have witnessed due to declawing. Ironically, my "pro-declaw" neighbor has all but abandoned her cat after having him declawed when he was neutered at a few months of age. She argued with me over my anti-declaw bumper sticker and I explained it to her. Still, she adopted a kitten, had him declawed. and when he began peeing on her bed, sofa, etc., she put him outside. He is always at my house, wanting to come in. He also is hyper defensive, trying to bite when touched, even though he trusts me (I often give him food and water). He is a classic declawed cat, exhibiting all the behavior traits. I feel sorry for him.

a friend of mine would not have adopted many cats if she had not been allowed to declaw them. They live all together in a large home, so, I really am not able to sign this one. There must be many people out there who adopt cats and would otherwise not do so if they could not prevent them from fighting each other and damaging furniture.
As for my one calico, she likes a couple of scratching pads, but, also goes for the carpet on my stairs, even though one pad is placed there to divert her Fuzzy spots on carpet due to this habit.

Seems appropriate for a society which prefers materialism and self promotion to any thought of others. If they ban this they may actually expect their politicians and public figures to be HONEST: can't have that, sorry, wouldn't keep the money where it is! I won't say any more because I can't afford the legal rip-off fees to defend myself against corporate lawyers. Humanity is dead - long live humanity!!

I have owned cats my entire life and the thought of declawing is not even a issue. My cats love to claw things and I have numerous shredded scratching posts/pads to attest to that.
I recently had get together with some friends one of with adopted a cat.Conversation went to when is a good time to get him neutered and declawed. We all said neuter yes declaw absolutely not and I demonstrated on her hand what declaw does.It is surprising how many people have no idea what a cat goes through not to mention the complications it can cause to the cat.Happy to say we changed her mind and added that most vets including ours (not the same)do not do it.
