You are the reason our President is also our next President. You defeated Karl Rove, the Koch Brothers, and a bevy of billionaires and corporate criminals. When Republicans tried to take away your right to vote, you braved inclement weather, stood for hours in lines and voted anyway. When Republicans tried to take away your right to contraceptive care, you fought back. When Republicans tried to steal this election, you didn’t let them get away with it. You are the reason Barack Obama won. Here are the election results compared with my projections, in which I showed potential for rocket science. ;-)

With months of hard work, more phone calls, emails and letters than I care to think about. Hours and hours spent getting people registered, working day after day...yes, we can and yes we did.

Now, hand in hand let's refocus that energy on building a new tomorrow.

Thanks to all that voted and worked with the campaigns. Thank you, TomCat for your enthusiasm and not ever allowing us to believe that this was something we not could achieve. We did it - our president is a once in a generation president. This is our time to make history, our time to lay the seed for our children and grand-children. Let's all take hands and move - FORWARD.

Woo- hoo!

I think we can also take these results as a referendum on Citizens United. Adelson, the Kochs, and others poured billions of dollars into buying the election--and the country. The fact that they failed so miserably indicated that money just isn't worth as much as they thought. I can hardly wait until the next election to see if they continue blindly pounding money down the same old rat hole.

Well, TC, I was hoping that it wasn't mere optimism.

I DO seriously disagree with the commentor on your site who said that Bachmann and Ryan are mere ripples.
The fact that they are backed at all shows extreme ethical and cognitive difficulties are rampant , as does the fact that majorities in relevant states actually voted for Rmoney/Ryan.

The US suffers from a cancer.

That cancer continually flares up, although it goes into remission to some small extent, as it has done in the Presidential election, but not in the House of Representatives.

It suffers from other social ailments as well, which cause even the majority winners to pander to some extremely ill ideas.

The Supreme Court is packed by whoever is in administrative and ethical power, including in the Senate. This creates long-term illness, especially with the extreme tendency toward precedent in law.

those are only a couple instances of problematic tyranny and corruption.

(I just looked at my typing error above, and since it is unintentional both humorous and true, stet.)

Yay !!!!! Yippeeee !!!!! WE DID IT !!!!!!!!!
It was late in the day when I voted, close to closing. Too late to do anything ? I'm still not able to get through to the Voter office today.
Ya see.....My machine when I voted straight Democratic...voted for Romney.
It looked good initially, but when I spun the wheel to continue, it flipped to Romney.
I caught it.
They at the polls helped me get it right but said I was the first ????? or was I just the first to notice ?????
I knew that Obama as a Democrat would not win Texas, but really ????
They predict that the state should become Purple and swing by 2020, but if people do not know that our votes are adding discouraging is that for all the folks who already think our votes don't count in Texas.
I'll keep trying to get answers but this IS Texas
Deep sigh

Just got off the phone with the County Clerk.
Tried to convince me that their machines we well tested or that it was probably MY error. This went on long enough that I was getting angry.
In the end, they "said" they would recheck the machine but.....
If they do not repeat the steps I made, how will it repeat the error ?
Hopefully it is just a fluke, but at least I tried.

Guess it shows that, as of today, CAN'T buy US elections!

It's wonderful to know that WE have a friend in the White House.....WE women, same-sex couples, middle-class voters & parents....WE have someone who will protect our reproductive rights and strive for equality so our tax rates don't exceed those of billionaires!

WE have someone who will do the right thing....not just the RELIGIOUS RIGHT thing!

I think the rest of the world watching this election favoured Obama.. YEAH !!! Now , I hope that the 2 parties can put their differences aside and actually effectively work together to better the entire country. The president cannot make change on his own. Watching the president ,from north of the 49th parallel, make his winning speech ,I was once again impressed by his rhetoric and dedication to all the citizens of the country !

Thank you so MUCH TomCat - you were spot on and the pundits weren't!
I was so worried that the usual Repuglicon DIrty Tricks Brigade whose actions we saw aplenty leading up to and during the election - and which Beverley T above has noted (green star!) - and disenfranchisement of about 20 million probably Democratic voters would tip the balance.

Yet President Obama didn't lose yesterday despite everything - so here's a thought - how many would he REALLY have won with if all of those Dirty Tricks and blatent illegalities hadn't occurred?!!!

Well done my friends on Care2 - and well done America! (Please continue to unite to beat the Koch brothers and their minions!).

Good calls TomCat. Another trend I found encouraging is some tendency toward personal freedom. Marriage freedom in Maine, Maryland, and Washington state, and against Conservative Big Government interference in Minnesota. Also, marijuana freedom in Colorado and Washington state.

Great blog! And you did nail it. Here in MN, the teapublicans who took over our Senate and House, for the first time in our history in 2010 on a campaign of jobs, jobs, jobs and then spent two years attacking women, minorities and pushing the same agenda as the national party got swept pack out as fast as they came in and we now have control, solid control, of both houses and the governor's office. And both the voter id and ban of gay marriage amendments went down in flames too. At last, we can move forward again, done with the scourge of Tim Pawlenty and then the teapublican party. A new day dawning. :^)

Yes, the many encouraging results of the 2012 elections are truly a victory for the people--not Karl Rove, the Koch brothers or the other wealthy elitists who believed they could take over our government by spending millions of dollars to manipulate the electoral process. Instead, the majority of American voters put up a huge sign: NOT FOR SALE. And they chose the candidates and initiatives that were in the nation's best interests.

Thus, Barack Obama--who has proven himself to be a progressive, effective, decisive, fearless leader--will be our president for another four years. Tammy Baldwin has been elected as the first openly gay member of the US Senate. Through winning many other hotly contested races, the progressive Democrats have actually increased their majority in the US Senate.

For these and many other outstanding accomplishments, I wholeheartedly thank the American voters for getting it so right on Election Day 2012.

Beverly T., yours wasn't an isolated incident. Here the story from PA:

One day after election, voter integrity issues are a hot topic

“We know, for instance in Perry County, one of the machines was flipping votes for Obama to Romney,” Kauffman said, referencing a story that went national. “Those machines are getting older.”

2012 Voting Machines Altering Votes from Obama to Romney (video, preceded by 15 second ad):

Now that we have a Democrat as state attorney general, we might get to the bottom of it.

Beverly T (82)
Wednesday November 7, 2012, 6:43 pm
Thx Wayne
Somehow that doesn't console me. What's weird is I very nearly brought my camera in with me (no phone).
Then I nearly asked if someone had one I could use. By then the pollsters were working with me to correct the vote and I was feeling foolish. I should have gone ahead and felt foolish instead of being a fool. Oh well.
The other sad part of this is how close Obama came to winning the prescient and yes the Latino vote is HUGE here. Hey, maybe that's my answer...LULAC...(duh) .I'll call THEM tomorrow !!!!!!

Laser-like predictions, TomCat, and sharp comments from others! I've waited for YEARS for the repugnants to get overconfident and start to slip and fall. Their slime ball tactics were apparently overwhelmed yesterday by the sheer numbers of Democratic voters and their disciplined willingness to stand for hours in the voting lines. With voter suppression in FL, OH, PA, VA and elsewhere, I wonder what the Obama's REAL margin of victory was.

I don't live in the US (Australia) but I breathed a sigh of relief last night when Obama won. What I can't understand is why on earth you would have an election on a weekday? Ours are always on a Saturday, and no-one has to queue for hours - but then we have compulsory voting, I'm glad to say.

OK, I'm really late to this party because I did a bunch of reading, making notes etc then lost it all when my two boys decided to have a cat fight under my desk and, I'm sure, accidently pulled the plug on my computer! Arghhhhhh! Motherhood!

I'm impressed TC with your prestidigitation — the mixing of all those facts to come up with such a good result! See I knew that I had a good teacher in US politics!

It is interesting to see all the articles out there about why the Republican/Teabaggers lost. One article (for which I lost the url) kept on about the GOP ground game, analysing and re-analysing the tactics used to get out the vote. But nowhere in that particular article did they even suggest that their policy positions were out of step with the American public. Another article suggested that Romney lacked the presence of Mr Obama, and I would certainly agree, but that is not the whole story either. This from Newt Gingrich:

…we misunderstood what was going on in the country … Republicans are going to have to do a lot of rethinking at the presidential level … we have to become a party of inclusion, not outreach, … recognize that if you’re not going to be competitive with Latinos, with African Americans, with Native Americans, with Asian Americans, you’re not going to be a successful party.

Of course Donald Trump had to tweet his way into the history books with these little gems:

"This election is a total sham and a travesty. We are not a democracy!"
"He lost the popular vote by a lot and won the election. We should have a revolution in this country!"

"House of Representatives shouldn't give anything to Obama unless he terminates Obamacare."

One commentator wrote: "and I thought this would be the end of all the posts. maybe tomorrow"
I think that we are going to have 4 more years of his rants and tweets until this lameassed idiot gets the idea that the US is not his personal piece of real estate for development, or until the DOJ decides that this walking foul mouth is worthy of charging with sedition. Trump is probably hoping that something like that will happen, although he has removed the tweets, probably on the advice of legal counsel.

Thomas L Friedman in his piece "Hope and Change: Part 2" in the NY Times reminds us that McConnell in the opening days of Mr Obama's first term declared “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” As Friedman says

The G.O.P. lost an election that, given the state of the economy, it should have won because of an excess of McConnell-like cynicism, a shortage of new ideas and an abundance of really bad ideas — about immigration, about climate, about how jobs are created and about abortion and other social issues.

In a piece with Steven Colbert, Andrew Sullivan said: "I want conservatism to revive … to the changing demographics in our society … and come up with constructive proposals to help solve our problems …"

Seems that that is the approach that Mr Obama wants to take too. He said as part of his acceptance speech:

“We are an American family and we rise or fall together as one nation."

And I had to laugh when I read this tweet from a Canadian to Americans who were talking about moving to Canada as a result of the election:

Congratulations, Americans, for voting for better health care and other Canadian things. Soon y'all will be ending your sentences with "eh!"

Some of the reading I did came from The Atlantic and The NY Times. Here are 3 stories that I posted to Care2 that I hope you will find interesting.

Let's all hope and pray that the radical right can learn to coöperate for the people. Let's not have four more years of radicalism but four new years of coöperation for the people and for the country.

It was so satisfying to see that people were so aware of the Republican attempts to disenfranchise voters by making it harder for people in districts with high minority numbers to vote bu not supplying enough voting machines that they stayed in line up to 7 hours to vote out the scumbags. Backlash sting a bit guys?

"Disenfranchise" voters....what a politically polite word for discrimination.
To continue my story....Today I did get in touch with someone affiliated with L.U.L.A.C..
They were VERY interested.
When I mentioned that I had contacted the Voter Registration Office about the machine, I heard a small noise of "disgust" and then a quick soft "No" then "Let me get you in touch with Mr....". Which leads me to believe that looking beyond our local Gov was the correct thing for me to do. This is just as I have always suspected and apparently I am not alone which makes me sad, in the long run, for where I live.
I await the return call from Mr...... and frankly a part of me hopes that in the long run that I AM the error in all this. I keep wracking my brain over the steps I made. The only thing I know for sure is that I did NOT VOTE FOR ROMNEY !!!!! as the machine indicated.
In a side note....I asked one secretary if she went back to check her vote either by going through the pages or reading the summary at the end and she said NO she never thought about it. So there you have it. This could actually be an underhanded TEXAS REPUBLICAN TRICK !!!!!!!
Unfortunately, Texas is well known those especially on election day.

What really happened...

"We are not going to have a Supreme Court that will overturn Roe versus Wade. There will be no more
Antonin Scalias and Samuel Alitos added to this court.

We`re not going to repeal health reform. Nobody is going to kill
Medicare and make old people in this generation or any other generation
fight it out on the open market to try to get themselves health insurance.
We are not going to do that.

We are not going to give a 20 percent tax cut to millionaires and
billionaires and expect programs like food stamps and kid`s insurance to
cover the cost of that tax cut.

We`re not make you clear it with your boss if you want to get birth
control under the insurance plan that you`re on.

We are not going to redefine rape.

We are not going to amend the United States Constitution to stop gay
people from getting married.

We are not going to double Guantanamo.

We are not eliminating the Department of Energy or the Department of
Education or housing at the federal level.

We are not going to spend $2 trillion on the military that the
military does not want. We are not scaling back on student loans, because
the country`s new plan is that you should borrow money from your parents.

We are not vetoing the DREAM Act. We are not self-deporting. We are
not letting Detroit go bankrupt.

We are not starting a trade war with China on Inauguration Day in
January. We are not going to have, as a president, a man who once led a
mob of friends to run down a scared, gay kid, to hold him down and forcibly
cut his hair off with a pair of scissors while that kid cried and screamed
for help and there was no apology, not ever.

We are not going to have a Secretary of State John Bolton. We are not
bringing Dick Cheney back. We are not going to have a foreign policy shop
stocked with architects of the Iraq war. We are not going to do it.

We had the chance to do that if we wanted to do that, as a country.
And we said no, last night, loudly. "

R. Maddow

We kept the Senate. We did not get all of the Tea Party out, though we did get 5 of the worst 10 out, and many who were sent back were on the more moderate side. I realize there is a lot more work to do, and a lot more pressure to put, but I dare to hope we may actually see some results from it during this four years. Deep breath, roll up our sleeves, and back at it. Thanks to all.

So dayum glad I did a chair dance and scared my dawgs so bad they all ran for the far corners of the house. They thought mama had finally and totally lost it for good this time! LOL. Love me some Obama/Biden!

The American people, for the most part, saw through the smoke and mirrors, through the propaganda and smelled the's it, yeah, coffee and voted the right man back in for another term. THANK DAWG!!!!

We fended off another COUP by the FASCIST OLIGARCHS and made them WASTE MILLIONS of dollars on their sock puppet. Millions that could have been better spent on the homeless, the veterans, the JOBLESS and on a LIVING WAGE for the employees of those the Kochroach brothers, the Waltons and THE DONALD.

Which brings me to something else....I know, I digress, but bare with me here.....did not the Donald commit TREASON and VIOLATE THE PATRIOT ACTS by INCITING the masses to OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT????? If so, then why is he not sitting in a jailhouse somewhere waiting for a court date or better yet.....why is he not in Guantanamo?????

I sincerely hope that Eric Holder and his Justice Department is looking into all this mess and into the voter suppression tactics around the swing states. I wanna see that creep, Huston, in Ohio, put in prison for what he did and attempted to do!

Man, I cried and cried and hugged everyone within reach at the democrat volunteers party during the election coverage, and then I floated on air all the next day and I think I am still on cloud nine! Tom, you were right! I kept saying he would win in a landslide just to piss the trolls off, but I knew he would win. I had absolute confidence in his win.
I was watching the Stephanie Miller show on Current this morning and a caller said that her little grandson, 4 or 5 years old who heard that Obama won was crying tears of joy and told his grandma, "I don't understand why people don't like him, don't they know that he is such a good man, that he really cares about us?"
This is straight from the mouth of an earth angel, fresh from God.
Obama is our dear president, and I pray for his safety and his family's safety now, as they embark on this second and most awesome task of completing the work they came to do. Their mission is to "save the world" and they are doing it! My heart is opened and I love you all for being with him and with all of us who care about the important things in life: one another. Beverly T - Amazing - kudos to you for following this voter suppression situation all the way through and revealing this "problem".

Dianne M - I'm with's TOUGH being a Democrat in NE. It also broke my heart to see Lee Terry retain his House seat. He's a do-nothing...dug in like a tick for 13 years...goes along with whatever the GOP tells him to do. He was really sweating it, though...his win didn't come thru til the very end. John Ewing came too close for comfort. I live for the day we beat him! I agree, too, - the LAST thing we needed here was a tea party win...I don't care if she IS a woman...she is still WRONG!
In 2008, we turned 2 of our 5 electoral votes they are red again. I'm hoping for the day NE wakes up.

NO ONE CARES !!!!!!!!!!
The Election Office......"probably my fault" and "Well Obama won anyway."
I asked....Did he ???? and politely opened the person on the phone a new orifice about how could she know....maybe Obama won Texas too.....The future indications for parties the in the state....making each vote count in close races.....and what about the next race !!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure we have all wondered how in the world the Republicans think they can get away with all the voter suppression well.....
I just lived through the attitude that gives them that "authority".
This is one of the most despicable and disgusting experiences I have ever civically encountered !!!!!
Julian Castro says we will be a swing state by 2020.
Will we ???? How will we know ????
Never mind.....I actually think we won't be with this attitude toward possible voter fraud.
Until of course THE PEOPLE wake up here and pay attention TO WHAT THEY DO indise that booth !!!!!!
It's up to US.

This victory was even bigger than we see. If not for some extreme gerrymandering by the right, we would most likely also have won the house. Sadly... eliminating gerrymandering is about as possible as Bush being prosecuted for war crimes. Still, its heartening to know, that barring this stacked deck, we would have gotten more rabid wingnut Rebaggers out of our house.

The reason the Dems didn't want to go after Bush, is because they fear reprisals down the road. They also are afraid to change the rules of filibuster with similar intent. Dems want to make sure if they are ever in the minority again in the Senate, they have some power. Still, it has been abused SO much by the Rebaggers....I think they must take that chance. We must play the hand we are dealt.

I AM NOT CRAZY !!!!!!!
LAMHO !!!!!!
While no one in the "Official Kingdom" seems to care....THE TEXAS DEMOCRATIC PARTY KNOWS !!!!!!!!!
They have had other calls here in Texas...AND....their phone banks cover Florida.
Guess what.
Florida too.
DUH !!!!!!

I am NOT HAPPY of course to hear this but the up side is.....I am not "wrong"
At least as far as we, the voter, can tell from inside the booth BEFORE you hit enter.
I AM NOT CRAZY !!!!!!!

Oh and don't forget to document this as much as possible then.....
REPORT IT to someone, anyone, everyone.
Perhaps even tell the voters behind you yet to come which I must confess I did not do though everyone seemed to be aware of what was happening (small station). (Brave on the net...not so much in person LOL)
With enough noise being made over it....there is a CHANCE we can get this stopped.
Thanks for "listening" to my story.

Make the elections mandatory and by law.

Other countries have voting mandated by law.

Why shouldn;t we??

Glad that Obama/Biden won! YES!
