The Students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where a Republican Ammosexual domestic terrorist, who has been photographed in his MAGA hat, massacred seventeen of their classmates, are planning a major protest. I fully support their efforts. They are trying to be bipartisan. That is, they don’t want to side with one party or the other. That’s somewhat naive, but they will discover for themselves how partisan the issue is.

Oddly, I feel more hopeful they will move the mountains barricaded by the NRA somewhat than I have about other victim led efforts...maybe not by much--maybe just getting background check system working better and maybe DiFi's bill to raise the age for assault weapon purchasers to 21...HuffPo published a poll showing such events are elevating population concerns and not numbing us further...thanks TC

The shooting reveals what happens when a country has both lax gun laws and few options for those with mental health issues. Reasonable efforts to keep guns out of the wrong hands are important, but we still have to dig deeper for the real problem: our violent gun culture. We need to focus less on the branches and more on the roots.

Despite all the empty GOPIG/NRA rhetoric about it’s all mental health issue, the GOP, going back to St.Reagan, has systematically destroyed the country’s MH system. Reagan did it big time, as Gov. of California, where there previously had been one of the best systems in the country.
Apparently, just the day before tdump went off to “listen” to students in Florida, he signed something further eroding MH services. Going back, at least to Reagan’s administration, many GOPIGS have believed that illness, and mental illness, is/are the result on one’s “spiritual failings,” and that such people do not, therefore, deserve the help of others. The toxic legacy of that flow who acted his way through 8 years as president continues to impact the country negatively!
I do hope these kids can use their awful experience to bring us out of the depths of idiocy the GOPIGS represent!

More power to these students. They are determined to fight for what they believe in and that's to get guns banned. I just hope that tRump will finally except that thought an banning guns do exactly that. Thanks TomCat

“This is our opportunity to talk to President Trump, Gov. Rick Scott, and state [sic] Senator Marco Rubio to make sure that they know we are talking directly to them and all other members of the United States government that are being funded by the NRA to tell them now is the time to get on the right side of this.”

Doesn’t sound like they’re all that naive to me; they know quite well who are funded (mostly) by the NRA.

Actually it makes good sense to make this bipartisan and not start to blame Republicans before they’ve even started marching. That way there’s a slim chance that Republicans may actually listen to them. The gun problem goes beyond politics and money, it has become a cultural problem about which the majority of Americans want something done, and which can only be resolved bipartisan, or rather non-partisan. If nothing else, this could be the issue on which Congress could unite, forget about those votes and do the right thing: gun control measures.

The youth give me hope - nothing that I'm getting out of DC. Trump goes golfing the same day students are buried only miles away.

These young people are articulate and knowledgeable. They are going to let the deaths of 17 friends and the pain of the community be swept under the rug. With students like these, there is hope for the future!
I was particularly impressed with Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg.

Emma --- "... now is the time to get on the right side of this ... these people who are funded by the NRA are not going to be allowed to remain in office when mid term elections roll around. They are going to be voted out of office. Incumbency rates are going to fall. " --- I reckon these kids know more about civics than many adults who have voting rights, and it is evident that they are committed!

David Hogg --- " ... because this is not the time for inaction and debate." That time has long since passed. Action is needed. I was quite taken with David's last comment, his anger was articulate and palpable. He called out Drumpf as is correct. Republicans said that Democrats were the reason for the inaction, but David was not having it. He said "That's disgusting! ... Children are dying and their blood is on your hands!"

As I was driving about yesterday, I heard on the radio that Drumpf is talking about better background checks. Better background checks are needed. But I felt he was in a momentary appeasement mode. He will do very little just so he can say he did something. The NRA money is too irresistible to Republicans.
The solution is so much greater than spiffed up background checks and I think these kids are up to the challenge. As one of them said, "we have to be the adults." They will not be silent! They do not give consent for the murder of more people.

Resist, Persist, Remove!!!

Silence is Consent!!!

Emma Gonzales gave one of the best speeches I've ever heard. I have a lot of faith in this generation. They will be assuming real power as this country flips to less than half white by 2043, the south will be the first to do so, Arizona and Texas the first two states, I can't imagine Florida far behind. They are the ones who will drive the changes that bring America fully into what is the single most multi-cultural century on the planet bringing in what will be a global centric world in the long run. These children are at the forefront of that.

They've grown up in diverse environments. Every generation until this one grew up in pretty much isolated enclaves where everyone pretty much looked like everyone else. That has been changing but this generation (and my grandchildren at 18 and 16 are part of this) have ALWAYS had close friends of other races. They'll change the country and the world. Republicans are laughing this off as if Fox, but the last laugh will be had as the republican party virtually disappears and Fox becomes the laughingstock most of us already believe it is. Things are looking up, honestly, as hard as that is to see right now, it is still the truth of it.

I personally don't think background checks go far enough. I want every one who wants to purchase a gun to go thru some sort of certified training program, take a written & competency exam and be licensed to operate that gun. I haven't decided about requiring them to have insurance as well - I think the insurance companies are all rich enough at our expense.
