I like Rep. Ilhan Omar. She’s got spunk. At the same time, I recognize that her inexperience has led her to factual errors and statements that were too easy to misunderstand. If someone disagrees or want’s to correct her errors, they are free to do so. They are not free to set her up to suffer injury or death from a violent attack. However that is exactly what Trump and his Republican Reich are trying to do.

You're right, TC! I think she's too young/inexperienced to realize she has to be TWICE as careful as anyone else...or she's just fanning the flames of hatred/prejudice. It's an old story--women have always had to be twice as good, twice as efficient, twice as attractive (in the political sense) as men. And a MUSLIM???? Well!

I've said it before - I'll probably say it again.

No matter how one approaches the subject, Muslims have been around a lot longer (like before the Revolution) and contributed far more to America than most people imagine.

Free speech is precious, but it is not an absolute. There must be limits. Squelching those who preach violence and hate does not infringe on anybody's rights anymore than arresting some dip for yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theatre and prompting a stampede. With every right comes the responsibility to use that right wisely, not squander it on folly or extremism.

Who would have thought, at this time, of even talking about this?
While she spoke with her heart, dt spoke back with a vile threat.
She will learn from this experience, and with the backing of the Dems in the House, she will learn, and become stronger over this incident.
Good explanation, Joanne, thx!

I heard a fascinating MPR/NPR discussion last week with a attorney and University of MN advocate last week who basically said that hate speech is okay as long as it doesn't directly call for violence or attacks on people.....I really struggle with this, hate and prejudice are absolutely wrong, and something absolutely wrong should not be protected.... I try to understand that free speech is so important our founders made it #1, but I do think there must be limits in speech.....especially when they are lies and propaganda.....

Despicable the way tRump and his repugs cronies twist and mix up what other people speak.
She may not have the experience quite yet, but what gives brainless tRump the right to speak??
He not experienced at anything other than pushing the button on his tweeter device.
I agree with you TC and Pam that Rep. Ilhan Omar needs to step back an address issues in a slower manner, making sure she doesn't send or speak out the wrong type of messages.
Thanks TomCat

Drumph, and his cronies, and following sheep, do not care about free speech, unless it freely supports his/their BS!  Popper had it right!

Only this week Aussie rugby fans were shocked to learn that one of their million-dollar star players, Israel Folau, was issued with a Rugby Australia (RA) code of conduct breach notice recommending his contract be terminated, in the wake of the posts on social media proclaiming hell awaits “drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists and idolaters”. Folau, a devout (Pentecostal) Christian, has been reprimanded last year for similar tweets, is unapologetic and claims freedom of speech and freedom of religion for his action. The RA has answered that freedom of speech doesn’t imply freedom of consequences and as a role model and a national rugby player he’s supposed to represent ALL Australians.

If Australians can kick one of their best players and best hopes for good end-results from the national team for tweeting and posting hate speech, it is beyond imagination that the man who calls himself the President of the USA, and who is supposed to represent all Americans, is allowed to twitter hate speech day after day without consequence.

Ilhan Omar represents the fifth congressional district in Minnesota (mostly Minneapolis), I'm in the fourth district. She had ONE term in the Minnesota House when Keith Ellison ran for AG and won. She is young and inexperienced. She has said some ill advised things but the place she is coming from is to a two state solution. She's trying to point out the inequities of what has and is happening to Palestinians who are largely ignored except for being marginalized and brutalized in Israel itself - and in the countries they live in apart from Israel.

She DOES have to be more judicious in what she says, she DOES have many Jewish constituents and if she does not, she will be no more than a one term Congresswoman. Israeli policies are extremely harsh, they continue to push settlements into Palestinian areas. Netenyahu is a version of Trump. The middle eastern countries could help provide the two state solution by ceding some land to create a Palestinian state but refuse. It's a horrible situation and, yes, Israel is surrounded by enemies. Rep. Omar is trying, poorly, to point out that no one is doing anything to help Palestinians.

My Representative is Jewish, he and Ilhan get along fine, she is taking counsel from him and others. But she has to realize that everything she says goes under a microscope. She'll learn. But not so much that she loses who she is.because she brings this same energy to every aspect of her life.

I found Trump's pinned tweet to be the equivalent of putting a bounty on her head. HE doesn't think before he speaks either. I replied to him on his page that he should take that ugly lie down immediately. Speaker Pelosi is increasing security for Ilhan. But Trump started this whole mess by picking up on cherry picked snippets the right wing snipped out of the entirety of what she said. We don't kill people for having different opinions in this country. Or we don't usually. I think what Trump did is just one more violation of his Oath of Office, which he has never honored. He thinks he's president of the parts of America that agree with him only. He's wrong. Hate speech is always wrong. But, the idea of free speech doesn't work if you only apply in that way. Demonizing your opposition is not the American way, it's the trump way, the racist, bigoted way. I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it is still America. The only limits on speech are those Freya mentioned above. What a hot mess this nation has turned into under Trump and his wretched party.

The absolute WORST with words is our own Twitter bird who is the most pathetic diplomat that pretends to be a leader of the Free World, The United States. I am completely beyond embarrassed for our country and all the millions of good people who are doing their best to live a decent and respectable life here. And, if we aren't very very careful and wise in the next election, this bird-brain will be twittering beyond 2020. Oh God, No! All that it will take is for a 3rd party to run, and we're in doo-doo up to our eyeballs. I think that's why TRumpity is so brazen with how he's handling himself. He sees a plan unfolding to get him back into the Oval, now Awful office.

Listening to the tape, I understood immediately what she was saying. But as usual, the Dark Lord has taken Rep Ilhan Omar’s comments out of context and blown them up. Trump’s posted reaction is pure hate speech and he is inciting violence against an entire religious group, one that makes up maybe 1% of the US population. Such intolerance is unacceptable.

Steve Rogers is so full of shit, his eyes are brown! The Dark Lord has never incited violence??? What planet has he been living on? As the CNN host said, that’s an outright lie!

One thing is very clear to me, these racist bigots will never enter the pearly gates but be consigned to hell for all eternity.

Resist, Persist, Remove!!!

Lock HIM up!!!

Lona, there are people defending Israel Folau, saying he has a right to express his religious commitment. They miss the point - we are all allowed to express our religious views, but he made an offensive, unchristian, homophobic comment. That is why he is in trouble. People interpret news articles how they want, depending on their own beliefs. What ever happened to critical thinking?
