The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is probing the mysterious death of Rexdale W. Henry, who was found dead in the Neshoba County Jail on July 14. A private autopsy funded by prominent activists is underway.

Henry, a member of the Choctaw tribe and a longtime community activist, was found dead of unspecified causes in a jail cell on July 14 about 30 minutes after he was last seen alive. He was first detained on July 9 after failing to pay a traffic fine, according to the Jackson Free Press. He was the second person this year to die in the Neshoba County Jail.

The Mississippi state crime lab has conducted an autopsy, while the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation continues its look into how Henry, 53, lost his life in a jail of the same county known for the Mississippi Burning murders more than 50 years ago.

For a private autopsy in Florida, Henry's family is receiving aid from civil rights activists John Steele and Diane Nash, a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the early 1960s. Syracuse University law professors Janis McDonald and Paula Johnson, both part of the school's Cold Case Justice Initiative, are assisting as well, the Free Press reported.

“Mr. Henry was a dedicated family man and the medicine man for his Choctaw community of Bogue Chitto,” Steele said in a statement.

Supporters of Henry's family reportedly said the results of the private autopsy would be made public.

Henry was a candidate for the Choctaw Tribal Council in Bogue Chitto the week prior to his arrest, the Free Press reported. He reportedly coached stickball in his community as well.

McDonald said the unexpected death of a longtime activist like Henry echoed the mysterious death of Black Lives Matter activist Sandra Bland in Waller County, Texas in mid-July after an aggressive traffic stop that violated Texas Department of Public Safety standards.

“At a time when the nation is focused on the terrible circumstances of the brutal death of Sandra Bland, it is critical to expose the many ways in which Black Americans, Native Americans and other minorities are being arrested for minor charges and end up dead in jail cells," McDonald said in a statement.

Bless Your Heart and Thank You Very Much for posting this Jamie, networking and social / sharing this type of brutal behavior, is the only chance of curtailing these murderous acts!

It is unbelievable, how many more People have to receive a 'Death Sentence' for traffic violations!

I think the tweeter comment certainly highlighted things:

The similarities between #SandraBland and #RexdaleHenry is horrifying. Minor traffic infractions, arrest, and found dead in cell later.

Both activist as well. Is this the way that our Country is going to deal with the activist. Pick them off one at a time that way it is hoped the act of murder isn't noticed so much.

Thank you Jamie for highlighting this. Over and over again, every day another is killed with in the hands and custody of the police.

There is something awful wrong when we have statistics that show there were more people killed in the month of March in the USA by police than the entire 20th Century in the UK! US citizens take notice, there is a war on you!

Shocking, troubling and very sad. My heartfelt condolences to Mr. Henry's family, friends and tribe. Native American activists have long been targeted for extermination. We need to demand an investigation, immediately. Thanks for letting us know, Jamie!

Thanks for sharing this info--yes agree with you Dandelion--just so sad that there are always a handful that ruin it for the rest and give them a bad name. Prayers sent to the family for their loss and those who have also gone.

"Almost Every 24 Hours, Someone, Somewhere in the US has been 'Executed' for a mere infraction!!!

The driver in this story was shot point blank in the 'head' by a campus officer on July 19th, the officer was indicted on murder charges just yesterday.

I am not surprised at anything that is against Blacks and the Choctaw Indian Tribe here in KKK Country! FYI, KKK Headquarters is in that vicinity, Meridian and Philadelphia, MS!!

It's COMMON! Murder, followed by "fake suicide". They must have the suicide-faking technique down pat. Share it among various jails in various States. Been going on for years. Way to fool autopsies, etc., or at least to "lean on" the one doing the autopsies, to come up with the desired result...

who is protecting the streets if all the cops are busy murdering their prisoners ?? I'm sorry I don't mean to paint everyone with the same brush , but there seem to be to many similarities in too many different locations . it becomes very wearing when you read the same news day after day . Dandelion , I think it's time for one of your uplifting , happy stories , please .

"...the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice reported that Native Americans are killed by police at a higher rate than any other demographic group in the United States." Guess the cops needed to keep up their quotas.
Poor jokes aside, I hope there is a federal investigation as well - I wouldn't trust ANY local Mississippi branch to be totally fair and impartial. Glad Henry's family has high caliber legal representation.

This is the escalating SOP of the 1% of evil that rules the planet---and those who are bought by and work for them. It's their cold method of ridding themselves of thorns in their sides. Activists, Consumer Advocates, Dr.'s of alternative natural medicine, those who partake in the sale, or spreading knowledge of anything (like natural and organic products) that reduce the 1%'s profits and gains. It always has been, but now we communicate quickly, so, the news gets out more often, before it can be twisted or buried. The meek, the good, true humane human beings are enlightened, for the most part. They don't see a way to unite. They're kept busy surviving, distracted by wars and turmoil. Their spirits are kept low, watching Earth and all that lives being destroyed, systematically, by the 1%. That 1% is winning because they learned a valuable lesson--- unite, work fast and ruthlessly, have control over most of the globe's money, buy into governments, control the masses health and welfare systems, control every powerful source that man requires for survival--- then the world is your's and they're at your mercy. They have no mercy, for they gained the world and lost their souls. Thanks Jamie. Anyone voting for the 1%'s bought Republicans? How's Bernie Sanders, who refuses to be bought by them, sound right about now?

Thank you, Jamie. I have been following this story.

The American "right" doesn't care about justice except for the wealthy connected. That includes Democratic Party office holders posing as Democrats when they are actually stealth Republicans.

I don't know what to say. The more I look into the history of the United States and the violence against the indigenous people as well as the Spanish and black people, the more I see it continuing in this current day and age. I don't know what happened to this man, but it is very suspicious and eerily similar to Sandra Bland. It's also consistent with the Indian woman who was locked up and complaining she was in agony, so they dragged her into a holding cell where she died.
