Noted, First wolfs, now horses ... wasn't one of his campaign promise to permanently ban horse slaughter (and exports of horses for human consumption)? On the flip side, he can always say there are way too many horses nowadays (you know they don't run on batteries).

I am so glad that you posted this Pink, since your articles are politically related. Obama signed this into law, ignoring that 70% of the American people oppose this. He did it quietly on purpose. I know of no one that does not find this outrageous and disgusting. While the eating of all meats involve the taking of life, the fact remains that these horses, which I consider my intelligent brothers and sisters, have given their all for humans since we domesticated them. They have carried us in war time, and they help rehab and heal children and adults with certain disabilities. This is the way we thank them. Since I have found out about this, I have not been able to rest or sleep a wink, because of my disgust, and shame for being human. I will not eat my friend, whether they are a human, a horse, a cow, or a chicken. This makes me never want to eat again, period! Like I have already said between these last 2 days: I will lose respect for anyone who works for animal rights, that again votes for Obama in 2012. He has broken all his promises to animals, domestic and wild, and will obviously continue to have "czars" like our buddy Ken, who will continue to obliterate every wild animal possible. I would like to see someone here try to explain this one away. Say NO TO OBAMA in 2012, and yes to the Green Party. In 2016, the Humane Party, the first Party devoted to animal rights and welfare, will have it's first Presidential candidate. But many here, that profess this and that, will continue the status quo, and vote Democratic anyway this election. Obama is using the excuse that this will create jobs. All the people who have looked into this, says it won't, and the few that are created will be minimum wage, garbage jobs. I hope so, if they intend to slaughter innocents to get a buck. Where is the sanity? Too soon to star you Pink. ~Andrea

Given what horses can teach us and how they help humans, it is nothing less than barbaric to slaughter and eat horses. We are not Neanderthals any more. How we treat all living creatures reflects how far from cave dwelling we've evolved -- or not.

I am ashamed to say, our very own Max Baucus was the one who "talked" this action threw. Tell him what you think on his website, please.
They showed the stock yards at a horse slaughter plant on TV this week.
One of the pens were full of yearlings, colts that didn't meet breeders expectations, young and fat.
All the pens they showed had fat, young horses in them. You won't find a starving horse in those pens. None where even injured.
If you have a starving/neglected horse, don't expect a kill buyer to buy it, they aren't going to waste their time and money getting it ready for slaughter. Rescue operations is about the only route or just let it die.
Now the breeders have a cheaper out, the race track breeders have a better way out for that horse that doesn't win races and isn't good enough for breedng.
This will not make any difference with horse's problems, just makes it worse.
Why wouldn't anyone listen to us? Well, we're not done expressing our utter horror that this was established again and I am hoping this next election can make a difference. It's the state/local Reps that made this happen, take your time in selecting who you vote for.

Nobody should eat horsemeat. How retarded can you get. They're not bred as a food animal like cows or pigs. First thing, stop breeding so many horses so there aren't as many period, second don't only go after Obama but everyone who voted FOR this in the gov., third how is it 70% are opposed to horse slaughter meaning who is eating the horsemeat? The other 30%? Doesn't make sense. Fourth, there's always little men acting like big men in the case of the cowboys in the video or the guy with the gun.

PinkMindy E (567)
Saturday December 3, 2011, 4:34 am

Neither I nor the U.S. Congress (as far as that I am aware) have placed a loaded gun to Obama's head and forced his pen to strike a signature upon H.R.2112 and thereby lifting the already set in place restrictions, which were preventing further horse slaughter in the first place.

Some would like to make you think that this is somehow all my fault or perhaps it is your fault or even perhaps the devil made Obama sign it, however ...

I believe it is a pure and simple case of political pro-Obama self-protectionism and it is these same people who refuse to take action to stop it; therefore ...

We may all view this type of person as being: In Favor Of Horse Slaughter For Human Consumption.

So therefore I say specifically to them: Get Out Of Our Way, So That We May Help To Stop This Animal Cruelty And Insanity!!!

Take action or leave this comment line is my advice.

Not sorry if I offend, because this is about something far greater than concerning PinkMindy or any one single individual's political perception -- It's about the horses and their rights to live in safety -- And that's all this is about!

There are about 30+ Care2 article comment lines that are still waiting for mainstream verifiable proof concerning President Obama as being a great president of the United States ...

I have not seen one single solitary proof to that effect -- Not a one as yet; however there are existing on the Internet loads of mainstream articles that project Obama as being nothing more than a 3rd-Rate Chicago politician!!

And that axiom would indeed explain ALL of Obama's questionable actions since entering the White House ...

In my opinion.

Kenneth L (314)
Saturday December 3, 2011, 4:56 am
Unfortunately due to your mania for Obama bashing no matter what PinkMindy, you detract from the focus in this case on horses which should be 100% but it's ending up looking like just another Obama bash by you. That's MY opinion. Get over that stupid 'Chicago politician' thing too that your 'grandmother warned you about'. You play the same record over and over and over in your head.

PinkMindy E (567)

Clarification Statement:

This horrible injustice is also the responsibility of the U.S. Congress, Local Representatives ... And President Obama together, but Obama is not squeaky clean in all of this, so don't try to force any rose-colored glasses onto my face, in order to try to force me to see it for any less than it really is.

Please BOYCOTT ALL horse related "entertainment." This has SO MUCH to do with what is happening to these magnificent beings! Every time you go to a rodeo or go to or bet on a horse race or ANY OTHER related venue, you are dooming those who don't MEASURE UP and giving these GREEDY breeders more money and reason to keep overbreeding. WE have to take responsibility by hitting them in the pocketbook just like with puppy mills.

IT'S THE SAME PRINCIPLE!! Take their money and motivation to overbreed away and 100,000 horses WON'T be horrifically slaughtered in 2012!. They deserve BETTER! Without them, humans would STILL be living in caves!!! They brought us into the modern age and this is the THANKS they get?!!! DISGUSTING!!!

From a Mahayana Buddhist view.... One of the most important tertöns of Tibet, Jigme Lingpa, wrote of his great compassion for animals.

Of all his merit-making, Jigme Lingpa was most proud of his feelings of compassion for animals; he says that this is the best part of his entire life story. He writes of his sorrow when he witnessed the butchering of animals by humans. He often bought and set free animals about to be slaughtered (a common Buddhist act). He ‘changed the perception’ of others, when he once caused his followers to save a female yak from being butchered, and he continually urged his disciples to forswear the killing of animals

In The Life of Shabkar, the Autobiography of a Tibetan Yogin, Shabkar Tsodruk Rangdrol wrote:

Above all, you must constantly train your mind to be loving, compassionate, and filled with Bodhicitta. You must give up eating meat, for it is very wrong to eat the flesh of our parent sentient beings.
The Angulimaliya Sutra quotes a dialogue between Buddha and Manjusri on meat eating:

Mańjusri asked, “Do Buddhas not eat meat because of the tathagata-garbha ?”

The Blessed One replied, “Mańjusri, that is so. There are no beings who have not been one’s mother, who have not been one’s sister through generations of wandering in beginningless and endless sa?sara. Even one who is a dog has been one’s father, for the world of living beings is like a dancer. Therefore, one’s own flesh and the flesh of another are a single flesh, so Buddhas do not eat meat.

“Moreover, Mańjusri, the dhatu of all beings is the dharmadhatu, so Buddhas do not eat meat because they would be eating the flesh of one single dhatu.”

This is the worst news! It's so hard to believe Obama signed this into law. I actually wrote him a letter while he was a senator when I lived in Illinois and it was about this very topic, and this was during this time that the Republicans were blocking the move to get horse slaughter banned in the U.S. He wrote a letter back to me saying that he was definitely against the slaughter of horses for human consumption and that if we was elected president he would see to it that horse slaughter would never be legal in the U.S. and that he was in favor of banning it altogether- then he does this! Just like he threw the wolves under the bus with the last budget bill, now he has thrown our horses under the bus too! I'm so disappointed in him! Now, once again we are a nation which slaughters horses again, and our Nation is truly tarnished with this horrible shame! Toni Adisano makes a good point! If all animals were gone today, I certainly wonder how safe human beings would be from each other! We need to invest money into foods that don't require the horrible suffering of animals and are healthier for us- plant based foods. Please write, fax, and phone to your congressmen and the president, tell them to cosponsor or support the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. This is the only way we can stop this horror from returning! Please visit Wayne Pacelle's blog at to read what we need to do to sop this now! We must act quickly, there's no time to lose.
