Oil is for only a few years. Mending a reef takes thousands of years. Petition already signed, thank you Deb.

Beautiful not animals but "INDIVIDUALS"!!! I went twice to Bar Harbor, Maine, from Rome, Italy, just to make Whale Watching!!! The ones I saw were Humpack Whales. My first time was more lucky: a Mum & her Baby approached the boat (4 - 5 metres FROM US) and remained there still for 10 minutes....with their heads out of the water: "watching curiously " at US and "speaking" ABOUT US.... The mother was undoubtedly explaining something to her baby....It was a touching experience....some tears were on my face (the Captain said he never happened to attend such an event.. in his 20 years experience!!!)

Thank you for another well-written article. Although the oil industry has an ability to intice govs to throw ethics, you, wildlife and environment out the window, I actually feel postitve that both activists and residents are coming to together to stop this possible nightmare. In situations like this, sometimes the populace is divided, but it doesn't appear so here. So we shall see....And yes action taken.

Environment Minister Tony Burke

Thank you for a touching and beautifully-written article! I could almost visualize the unblemished beauty of the Kimberly while reading your description of it! I've been on several Atlantic whale watches and have seen firsthand the gentle and playful interaction between mothers and their calves, so the humpback whales hold a special place in my heart.

As noted above, I've already signed the petition and encourage others to do so as well. Let's leave a few square miles of this earth undesecrated by the oil industry! And the whales need to be protected. They are phenomenal creatures.

Thanks Deb. Signed previously. More shortsighted thinking. The oil will be used up in a few years but the ecological damage will be devastating.

I singed the petition on June 26, but thank you for the article and for bringing this up.

There is nothing good that I can find about the oil industry, however much I may struggle to do so. It has two common denominators, which in each and every case are the same: pristine nature and its destruction. What predominates is the industry's unscrupulousness and absolute disregard for fauna, nature, and/or people.

This sounds like a precious natural environment inhabited by equally precious (and fascinating!) creatures, and as such it should remain untouched. The Australian authorities should prevent this filthy industry from destroying the area, since it is more valuable than any lucre that can be ever made.
