This is a very good presentation about why we need to clean up this growing threat to American life. The last sentence was also an excellent summation: "Private industry is not going to step in and save people from drowning, or help them rebuild their homes without a solid profit." In order to stay afloat as a nation we need each other, not savvy businesspeople who presume to tell us all how to be rich. We can't all be rich. We just want to keep from drowning." * Absolutely*

Even back in the 90s when they were privatizing school buses, it never made any sense. There shouldn't be a profit on school bus service.

....fyi, my son just received a package for which my wife paid for "FedEx", but "FedEx" means USPS in our suburban neighborhood???????????? What happens when the private company doesn't want to serve your community???????????????

I have been noticing that for some time now. I get quite a few packages that way.

And yet, they want to get rid of the post office. Go figure.

Dave, I retired from the USPS in 2005. For two or three years, prior to that time, there was a private delivery service that charged more than twice the USPS rate for weekend next day service. BUT what was actually happening was that that the private company would use USPS for delivery in all the big cities. Of course, it charged more because it was suppose to be more efficient than the Postal Service. (BTW! This company was not FEDEX.) Right now, the USPS delivers 25% of ALL FEDEX, UPS etc mail.

Profits before people is NOT working except for the very few at the top of the heap. Most people are doing a lot worse not just financially, but emotionally and health wise as well. Not to mention our environments are certainly doing worse.

All of these areas serve the common good and welfare and it is criminal for anyone to use these services for enriching a few. Even WITH health insurance It gets expensive to have health care. This is corrupt capitalism. It has been perverted by Wall Street Banksters and the GOP extremists.

Always remember that even if the service costs about the same, when contracted out it is more expensive because of the contracting process and monitoring than if government did it by themselves/

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." Nowhere in there do I see anything that might say "promote the general welfare" might actually mean "make sure that some people get really, really rich while others suffer horribly". Privatization will be the downfall of these United States. Thanks for posting, Robert, and thanks for sharing Sheryl

The worst part is that the Government itself is being privatized - maybe we should form a co-op to buy our Own Representatives?!

I made a similar comment on another thread Yvonne. That when a Government, like in the city of Detroit, where the elected officials are replaced by some manager not elected. When the Judges drag their feet and back the ones in the State that are having rulings without full debate, votes in the middle of the night, calling sessions with no time for the people to know what is going on, attaching riders to bills that have nothing to do with the original bill, it just goes on and on....varying from State to State, City to City......but when they totally ignore the people I say, IGNORE them. Find another building and just "buy" our own Elected Officials and move on. Why is is we must follow the criminals anyways.

Thank You Robert for posting, tweeted and noted. Also Thank You Dandelion for the link. We can all stick our heads in the sand when it comes to prisons, banking, etc. but none of us can look the other way when it comes to water and sewer. Water if the most scary to me since fracking wells are peppered all over the US. Not only is it poisoning the water but it devalues any and all property where the water is poisoned. I worry for my children and grandchildren paying $10 per gallon of privatized water.

Fascinating article. The privatization trend is a frightening trend. It has its advocates in Canada as well but inside the U.S., its tentacles are particularly tenacious. It always puts profits ahead of people and is very undesirable.

The idea of Profit Prisons is insidious, there appears to be a vested interest in creating more prisoners for profit as the U.S. jails more people than do most countries and also jails them for offences that in other western nations jail time is not the punishment. A fine or community work is seen as more beneficial to society.

Health care for profit is also frightening. I am relieved that I have a universal health care system that is not motivated by profit.

Privatization bring monopolies....didn't we get rid of those a couple of times in the past century? Seems they keep creeping back in....because some greedy pig wants to be "king of the world." Sick. Sincerely psychotic. How do we "fix" this badly broken system?
Awhile back, Kit mentioned a show on the SyFy network called "Continuum," which I'm also a big fan of. One of the lead characters name is Alec....check it out, you might find it interesting....
