Even though FGC is practiced in mostly Islamic countries, it is not an Islamic practice. FGC is a cross-cultural and cross-religious ritual. In Africa and the Middle East it is performed by Muslims, Coptic Christians, members of various indigenous groups,

It is so horrific to think that people do these kinds of horrible procedures, especially on such young babies!! I hope we keep fighting to get this custom changed...I wonder how hard countries are working to eradicate this?? This should be a global action!! I wonder how prevalent it is here in the U.S.?? I know male circumcision is common here, but I am not aware of the prevalence of FGC. I have heard of 1 case in Georgia, and that man was prosecuted, but other than that I have no idea....

I knew that David Bowie's wife, Iman, is quite an advocate against female genital mutilation, but was shocked when I saw a program last year that spoke on how very prevalent in the U.S. Being an underground practice - someone could , conceivably, perform over a hundred of these mutilations before a girl is hurt so badly that she requires medical care, possibly exposing the sick little group.

here in germany it is forbidden and if a person ( doctors or other) get caught, they go in jail for a long time. did you ever read the book desert flower, from a famous model who is originally from sudan??? she wrote about it and she works for unicef now. and because of this i think those woman in sudan/ dafur they want to stone are innocent, because there it is a very normal pratice and so i do not believe they would ever find themselves a lover if they are married. sex is pain for those women. but it comes all down to men again, and men religions, doesn't it???.

When people migrate, they carry there traditions with them. In many countries it is culturally accepted.
In the US and Canada, we practice MGM aka routine infant circumcision on boys every day and few think anything about it. WHY? Because it is culturally accepted. HHHHHMMMMMMMMM....Something to think about.

YES and when you don't allow it they visit the "Old Country" to have it done.
Good same sex education is the key.

Male circumscission may have some benefits but this has none.
Iit is barbaric, inhumane, degrading, anti-woman, anti-humane.
We would not do it to an animal.

Male circumscission has NO legitimate benefits either. It is merely culturally accepted child abuse and mutilation.
It is barbaric, inhumane, degrading, anti-child, anti-humane.

Nomatter how unnecessary or cruel you think male circumcision is, it has none of the far-reaching and debilitating side effects of female genital mutilation. Circumcised men lead a full and fulfilling sexual life, which is obviously not the case for women who have been subjected to FGM. Male circumcision is carried out in hospitals uder the supervision of doctors, without the risk of infection or bleeding to death, which are very real dangers for girls who are cut with much-used razors or old knives and no idea of sterilization, on the dirt ground of huts. Women having undergone FGM are plagued throughout their lives with pain and often disease, for example, fistula, whereas there are no such effects for male circumcision.

The successful substitution of alternative rites of passage for FGM is the subject of an article I posted less than 2 weeks ago. If you care about ending this brutal practice it is worth a copy-paste to see about the "Safe Haven for Girls: Alternative Rites of Passage Offer Women in Kenya an Escape from Female Genital Mutilation" -

There is a must-see site for the issues of violence against women, forced and too-early marriages, female genital mutilation and ending fistula :

It's the US site for a United Nations fund UNFP and deals with all of these issues because they are connected.

This is just one aspect that is highlighted on the site:
"Fatima was 14-years-old when she married. Soon after, she became pregnant. "I was in labor for six days, said Fatima, who eventually gave birth to a stillborn baby. For six days I did not pass stool or urine. When the urine finally came, it came nonstop. That's when I knew I had a problem." (...more)"

We know how to end fistula and we know how to phase out female genital mutilation but money, funding, are necessary in both cases. That is why these problems persist !

Fistula, the devastating child-birth injury, is one of the most horrendous side-effects of infibulation, the "type III" female genital mutilation discussed in Lauren's article.

There's a video about fistula entitled " If you don't know what fistula is, it's because the yicky condition is so hard to talk about."
I posted it a while back. If you haven't seen it, do take a look now:

Fistula is preventable. Yet over 2 million women in Africa, Asia & the Arab region are living with the condition & some 50,000 to 100,000 new cases develop each year. The persistence of fistula is a signal that health systems are failing to meet women's needs.

Michael Angel, The 'junk science' study you sited is exactly that, JUNK. There is also a "junk science" study suggesting that FGM may also help to prevent HIV/AIDS. BS, to both.

Please note the following story;
Also, please take a moment to educate yourself on the facts of MGM;

GENITAL INTEGRIT is A HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUE. No male or female should be forced or coerced into a unnecessary, unethical and painful procedure.
COMDOMS are the answer to preventing the spread of STD's, not sexual/genital mutilation. No one, to my knowledge has ever suffered or died or had life long problems and complications from the proper use of CONDOMS.

Male Circumcision
Radical Sexual Surgery
What Is Lost?
When a baby boy's normal healthy foreskin is amputated, this is what he
will lose -- forever:
*+1. The pleasures of his multifunctional natural foreskin, which comprises
50% or more of the mobile skin system of his penis. If unfolded and spread
out flat, the average adult foreskin would measure more than 15 square
inches (the size of a 3 x 5-inch index card). This highly specialized
tissue normally covers the glans like an eyelid covers the eye, protecting
it from abrasion, drying, callusing (keratinization), and contaminants of
all kinds. The effects on male and female sexuality from the loss of the
natural foreskin have never been studied.
*2. The pleasures of his ridged band. Recently discovered (1996), this
half-inch wide band of soft, irregular, accordion-like corrugations is the
most intensely innervated erogenous zone on the male body - controlling and
triggering the male orgasm. The loss of this densely innervated, sexually
reactive, and pleasure-producing foreskin tissue reduces the full range and
intensity of sexuality - male and female.
*+3. The pleasures of his foreskin's 'gliding action'- the hallmark
synergistic mechanical feature of the natural human penis. This
non-abrasive gliding of the penis in and out of itself
(evagination-invagination) when masturbating or when within another body
facilitates smooth, easy, pleasurable movements for a man and his partner.
Without this remarkable gliding action, sex as nature intended it is
impossible, and the corona of the surgically altered penis malfunctions as
a one-way valve, scraping natural lubricants out into the drying air and
making artificial lubricants essential for mutually pleasurable
intercourse. Male foreskin amputation makes normal sexual kinetics impossible.
*4. The pleasures of thousands of his coiled fine-touch mechanoreceptors
called Meissner's corpuscles, the single most important sensory component
of the natural/intact penis, encapsulated Pacinian, Vater-Pacinian,
Ruffini, and Golgi-Mazzoni corpuscles, Merkel's tactile cells, nociceptors,
and branches of the dorsal and perineal nerves. Altogether, between 10,000
and 20,000 specialized pleasure-producing nerve endings of many types,
which can feel slight motion, pressure, stretch, subtle changes in
temperature, and nuance in texture, are lost.
*5. The pleasures of his frenulum, the highly erogenous V-shaped web-like
tethering structure on the underside of the glans that is frequently
amputated along with the foreskin, or severed, either of which destroys its
subtle and important mechanical function and its capacity for giving
pleasure. The frenulum forms two sides of the area called the frenular
delta - the most intensely innervated part of the ridged band.
6. The pleasures and functions of more than half of his
temperature-responsive peripenic smooth muscle sheath called the dartos fascia.
7. The protection of his immunological defense system of his smooth mucosa
of his inner foreskin. This produces both plasma cells that secrete
immunoglobulin antibodies and antibacterial and antiviral proteins such as
the pathogen-killing enzyme lysozyme.
8. The protection of lymphatic vessels, the loss of which reduces the lymph
flow within that part of his body's natural immune system.
9. The value of estrogen receptors - the biological/sexual purpose of which
is not understood and needs further study.
*10. The value of his apocrine glands of his inner foreskin, which secrete
pheromones - nature's powerful, silent, invisible behavioral signals to
potential sexual partners. We know the effect of their absence on human
sexuality can be profound, but have never been studied.
11. The protection of his specialized epithelial Langerhans cells, a
first-line element in his body's natural immune system in a whole penis.
+12. The unknown value of the pink to red to dark purple natural coloration
of his undamaged glans. The connective tissue which protectively fuses his
virgin foreskin and glans together while his penis develops, is ripped
apart during male foreskin amputation, wounding the glans and the foreskin
remnant, leaving them raw and subject to infection, scarring, pitting,
shrinkage, and eventual discoloration.
*+13. The pleasures of the full potential of his natural penis length and
natural penis circumference because its double-layered wrapping of loose
and usually overhanging foreskin is gone, making his partially amputated
penis truncated and thinner than a full-sized natural penis.
*14. The value of several feet of blood vessels, including the frenular
artery and branches of the dorsal artery. The loss of this rich vascularity
interrupts normal blood flow to the shaft and glans of his penis, altering
development of his penis and damaging its natural function.
*15. Every year boys lose their entire penises from foreskin amputation
accidents and infections. Some are then 'sexually reassigned' by castration
and 'transgender surgery' and told to live their lives as 'females.' The
long-term effects of trans-gendering experiments are unknown but recent
evidence indicates it can be psychologically devastating for the victim to
live contrary to his natural sexual orientation.
16. Every year many boys lose their lives from the unreported and concealed
complications of non-therapeutic, non-indicated, unnecessary foreskin
amputation surgery; a fact the multi-billion-dollar-a-year male sexual
mutilation industry in the US obscures and ignores.
17. By encoding violence on the brain, the infant's emotional bonding with
his mother is disrupted, delaying his social development.
18. Indications are that his innate sense of trust in intimate physical
contact at this pre-language state of his development is inhibited or lost
as a result of suffering such excruciating pain at this early age. In its
place are instilled fear, confusion, and a sense of betrayal by his mother.
19. His natural self-confidence and hardiness, by forcing the newborn
victim into a defensive psychological state of 'learned helplessness' or
'acquired passivity' to cope with the excruciating pain which he can
neither fight nor flee. The trauma of being tied down and having the most
sensitive part of his body ripped apart and then skinned alive will forever
lower his pain threshold below that of intact boys and girls.
Contrary to pseudo-medical myth, the natural penis with its foreskin intact
is not defective or dangerous and does not require urgent surgical
correction. Through four thousand millennia of trial and error, Nature has
perfected human sexuality as a physical collaboration between two
exquisitely complimentary designs. The vagina was not designed to
accommodate a dry, keratinized, and immobile penis. Forcibly amputating a
man's ridged band is a barbaric form of 'neurological castration' that will
forever deny the abridged victim the capacity for experiencing many
pleasure-producing sexual sensations. The lack of the mobile
rolling-bearing gliding action of his natural foreskin system will forever
decrease the range and intensity of sexual pleasure for a man and his
female partners. To irreversibly alter and sexually dis-endow a man without
provable, immediate therapeutic need and without his permission is criminal
assault-morally unjustifiable and cruel. This document provides a
foundation of facts for a parent or patient being urged or coerced to give
'informed consent' for this mutilating radical sexual surgery
euphemistically called 'male circumcision.'
* These 9 items are irreplaceable. Their loss permanently reduces sexual
pleasure and fulfillment of the victim. See
+ These 4 items can be partially recovered by non-surgical expansion of the
existing foreskin remnant. See Complete documentation

I appreciate your activism and caring about FGM/FGC. It is a VERY important issue.
I have been an activist/advocate for GENITAL INTEGRITY for almost 25 years now.
I am well aware of the studies, complications and trauma, both physical and psychologoical, from both abuses.
Please read the following; "Similarities in Attitudes and Misconceptions toward Infant Male Circumcision in North America and Ritual Female Genital Mutilation in Africa".
(From The Female Genital Cutting Education and Networking Project)
WE, Jill, you and I are allies in this fight. I would respectfully ask that you research MGM as well and be and advocate for ALL human's right to GENITAL INTEGRITY.
Peace and Blessings

And it is simply ridiculous to suggest (with whatever bogus 'scientific' proof you like) that FGM can help protect against AIDS. If that were so, Africa would not be going through an AIDS epidemic of frightening proportions. I don't know how many tens or hundreds of thousands of African children have been orphaned by AIDS.

Jill, no one here ever said that FGM/FGC protects againsts AIDS. But there is a 'junk science" study claiming that is so. Just like the "junk science" study claiming that MGM prevents AIDS in males. Niether study is valid science and are both bogus. Genital Integrity, EDUCATION and the proper use of CONDOMS helps reduce the transmission of STD's.

one way to prevent STD is to educate people about sex properly so that they will be aware to protect themselves during sex.

My name is Rob, I am 27

My mother and father mutilated my body by circumcising me. I don't know what they were thinking but I think that didn't think much. I must Indore the pane, lose and betrayal of what they did to me. If they believed they helping me by removing a body part that they believed to be dirty, I only perceive that to be irresponsible. Washing with soap and water works good.

My mother's answer to my asking her why I was circumcised was, with sarcasm "What was I supposed to do, ask you". So my answer to her was "yes!, you do ask me. When I'm old enough to answer. My father's answer was that he wanted to which.

I am left with too large scars on my penis and a mutilated urethra. Because the skin of my urethra has bin cut I don't have the ability to urinate in a strait line.

Make this mutilation stop!

I hear the complaints against male circumcision and I don't get it. . . Having said that, I must say that I am NOT defending the type of MUTILITATION that Robert describes. That is the kind of horror that I pray will come to an end. I'm speaking of a sterile procedure in a hospital setting. Atrocities against those who cannot defend themselves MUST end. These are the actions that produce deep emotional scars as well as physical.
