Guantanamo detainees have been on a hunger strike for several weeks to protest their conditions and indefinite detention. Dozens of the prisoners at Guantanamo continue to be held despite having been cleared for release.

Signed JL. I am curious though, Liberty has just posted that the Pentagon requested $49 million to build a new gitmo prison. Why????

I was told by my senator that the current Gitmo is not being run in a cost-effective way, some of which are design of the facility--that's my best guess Shirley.

This is a national disgrace and these prisoners need to be freed. At this point it seems as though Gitmo is nothing more than a practice ground for the US to torture people. Enough with the bullshit politics and empty air promises! It is time for our president to start putting his money where his mouth is. Definitely noted, signed, twittered and google shared. Thanks J.L.

I dont think this situation would be allowed to happen over here prisoners can sue if their mattress too hard (going a bit far i think) so cant imagine what would happen if they were in conditions like that

Gladly signed. I can't believe in a country based on freedom and democracy that a prison like this has been allowed to be open for so long.

John G. posted the very same comment beore on my posts re this issue. It does NOT reflect reality.
I just heard on a very eloquent local radio feature a thorough report on gitmo.Among other details It said that there are currently 80 ! inmates whose guild was NOT APPROVED and their sentencing was REVISED, but yet they are held there for the only reason that govt. simply does not know where else to put them!

One of the biggest shames for US.

No John, but I'd welcome terrorists into my prisons. The trouble with Gitmo from the start was that there were few actual terrorists amongst the prisoners. Most of them were cut loose without charges. Scumbags in Afghanistan were reporting innocent people for the bounty.

You need to understand that there is not a single right wing politician or pundit who doesn't lie as often as he speaks.

Signed

As I recall, Mr Obama was going to close Gitmo but the Republican/Teabagger Congress passed legislation that prevented the movement of the detainees to American soil for trial or holding. Over 200 alleged "terrorists" have been caught and tried on American soil, while the military, who is in charge of Gitmo, has only dispatched 5 cases. Mean time, these men are penned up like animals, some without charges and none that has gone to trial. It seems due process in a speedy and fair way does not exist for these people. As human beings, their rights have been abused.

@ Robert K --- How do you know a Republican is lying? . . . his lips are moving!

Special thanks to Lynne for her comment, especially as she has been the ONLY one so far that I've seen using the proper term "ALLEDGED terrorists".!! This is ALWAYS to be said in each and every case without proper and lawful trial and conviction! Keep this in mind people, please!

All prisoners are entitled to due process, and evidence of charges at trial, or release.
