This is democracy? Torturing people. A soldier is ordered and no exit has to do.

That original news link you've provided us with, Rosie, is now reporting a fault.

It is so obvious a possibility that it even occurred to me, and I am so anti-conspiracy-theory it hurts. But the Drudge Report is hardly gospel. I put it one small step above Alex Jones.

Noted. Thanks, Rosie.
I agree with Joanne's above comment and think Drudge is probably right about as often as a broken clock....maybe.....

Erdogan is desperate to shift the majority of power within Turkey to the President. He has been pushing for a new constitution to that effect for years. Erdogan staging his own faux coup? It is absolutely plausible. It's Machiavellian politics 101.

Thanks Rosie. I don't have any doubts that the Sultan staged this "coup attempt" himself. And it was done so stupid that anyone can see through. Even what he claims now as having "narrowly escaped" death is a load of crap (sorry!). They could have taken his plane down within minutes if they would have wanted to.

Just for info (as Richard stated and you can find it all on the net): Erdogan has tried so far everything possible (behind the scenes) to alter the Turkish constitution and to take out that Turkey is since Ataturk a laical state; e.g. state and religion strictly separated. We should not overlook the fact the he is a Muslimbrother at heart. The same sickos we had here in Egypt just a bit more refined. The end result though is the same.

Many of the "analysts" were talking about the military wanting to seize power. No, wrong. When the military stepped in in the past if was only to stop what Erdogan tried too. After the threat was removed the military always handed the power back to a civil government.

The way it seems though - this "coup" has a big chance at firing back at Erdogan and explode in his face. His total humiliation of the military personal by stripping them almost naked and parading them to the public did not go unnoticed ...

Humankind is a pretty dumb species if power-possessors think that the highest form of civilization is the bombing of its fellow creatures.

I don't think so. Follow the money.

Interest link, Eleonora. Turkey’s Nukes: A Sum of All Fears

"But not even they can explain any longer why U.S. nuclear bombs are being stored in politically unstable Turkey as it grows increasingly Islamist and anti-American."

Randy - today I would adjust my statement: he probably didn't actively stage it but he had knowledge and let it happen to consolidate power as the most recent events over the last two days seem to confirm. Yet on the other hand I still can't quite believe that the Turkish Military would stage a coup attempt with such an extremely small support base. Just doesn't sit right with logic.

This is further proof that he uses the momentum to the fullest: Turkish lawmakers give leader Erdogan sweeping new powers

Which raises again the question: was it that he did it ... or did he let it happen?
