Airlines are now going into the business of gouging us left and right. They blame high gas prices and new security measures, but ultimately the consumer is the one paying. While there aren't always ways to get around these new airline fees.

fee for choosing a seat -- last couple of long flights, we didn't get the seats we had been assigned. Airlines are trying to make a buck - but AmTrak business class is VERY nice.

And yes, we can now add the airlines to the "greedy bloodsuckers" list of corporate raiders...so they charge for checked bags, and now want to charge for carry-ons too...and charge if you check in early, at the airport, or curbside, and charge for how you book a reservations...basically, they just don't want you flying with them unless and until you are willing to fork over BIG BUCKS to join them in the sky in a plane built by the lowest bidder that may or may not have had all maintenance work done on it...interesting concept. Flying is putting your life in someone else's hands that you hope is sober, has the ability, and is flying equipment built by the lowest bidder (so let's all hope that they didn't cut any really important corners while building it), and with other people that you hope do not have a death wish and you will be breathing in all the recirculated germs throughout the entire plane. Right. There's more to this list, but why bother?
And on the AmTrak issue, business class is very nice as is first class. Still, it depends upon the route and equipment on that route. We traveled first class several years ago on the "Spirit of New Orleans" from Chicago to New Orleans. The equipment was so old, filthy and not working well, that it should have been scrapped. Train officials said that only East-West routes get the new, good equipment while North-South gets the stuff out of the yard. That's another one they don't advertise.
