Pope Benedict XVI today boosted the chances of his successor as pontiff being an Italian when he named 24 new cardinals, 10 of them Italian.

i don't see the huge conspiracy here. Many of the Italians were appointed by prior Popes. As for the currently nominated, many priests who would currently be of an adequate age and experience happen to be Italian. In the past several decades, they still produce more priests than most other countries.

And I'm not surprised. The Pope can appoint who he wants, and Italy is a very Catholic country. Ten is still less than half of 24.

Of course, not being Catholic myself means I don't really know much about what goes on or is supposed to go on in the Vatican, so I could be off base, but this is just my opinion.
