Some observers condemned the secrecy, one commenting that recent UN talks on North Korea's nuclear programme were held in public - so why not on whaling?

It's "secret" because people are bribing and wheeling-dealing to get their way and they don't want the REST of the world, who might protest, to know about it. It's NOT a "done deal," not by a long shot. Expect massive civil disobedience if this self-appointed IWC thinks it has the right to "give away" the lives of cetaceans to the highest bidder (JAPAN!). No one has that right!

... its also secret because some of those involved are ashamed that they do not have the backbone to stand up against what is blatantly wrong :(

Thankyou Rooibos Bird, Update 17 mostly pro-whaling countries have had their voting rights striped. Officially because they did`nt pay their association dues. But I`m thinking it was because there votes in the past have been bought by the Japanese. The public meeting has now begun. I have several news posts regarding the public opposition to lifting the ban and Greenpeace`s betrayal of the whales.

Gary, you are SO right. That's the other half of the problem - caving in to bribes, bullying, pressure, threats, any anything else the Japanese and their buddies throw at people to get their childish way. The *nerve* of anyone to think they have the right to deal lives out like a deck of playing cards!

Bev (Pookie!), thank you for that background. I also agree that "failure to pay dues" means bribery/coercion or some form of threat in some form by the Japanese. For such an "honorable, ancient" culture, they certainly are behaving FAR from that right now trying to push their selfishness onto a last remaining members of a race dying because of humans can't think past stuffing their flesh into their mouths. MORLOCKS!
