Back in the days of the Cold War it was said that the optimists are learning Russian and the pessimists are learning Chinese.

Today it seems the optimists are learning Chinese and the pessimist are learning Arabic.

I do think that the writer of number 50 has it all backwards. As a Canadian, I knew French and English, then learned Spanish in California and manage some Italian pretty well from that. But Portuguese? My girlfriend is a Portuguese-American and I spend my summers at my U.S. home in Rhode Island, which has a very high percentage of Portuguese Americans. We have lots of Portuguese friends and go to most of the summer Portguese feasts, but the language? After ten years here I can read it as it looks like bad Spanish, but orally they might just as well be speaking Chinese as far as I am concerned.

Noted. My first "real" job was teaching French to 4th-6th graders in elementary school. The first 2 years was strictly oral and I used a lot of visual aids, including puppets, pictures, etc...and they caught on quickly. I also included cultural information. Americans tend to be very ethnocentric. Unfortunately the program was discontinued in the county where I taught.

I have learned some Spanish, but I'm no where near fluent. In fact I have forgotten quite a bit of what I learned. I would love to finish learning it though. There are a few other languages I would love to learn as well...

I've tried to learn French and Hebrew to no avail. Guess I just don't have an 'ear' for languages.

Takes time to learn a language when you are advanced in age. Little children easily learn and understand any language you teach them.
