Whether the person taking hostage is upset for being terminated, is trying to prove a point, or is just a random act, hostage situations can end very badly and seem to be happening more recently.

I blame most of this on our politicians and leaders. We have people stiring up others by telling them to bring guns, keep this or that on "target", etc. There are also Fox (Glenn & company) Rush L who inflame others into negitive action (they do have free speech). It is dividing the country, and making it so people are more "angry" than ever. Add to that, that the NRA (I own guns myself) have made it so guns can be everywhere. Just think, take your guns to the bar and get drunk and have a fight. A great mixture, don't you think so?

In the 60s (while I was growing up) we said MAKE LOVE NOT WAR. Now it seems these negitive people are shouting, MAKE WAR NOT LOVE.

I feel that these cases reflect the degree of frustration & powerlessness many people feel about their lives & circumstances.

Noted. When did it become the "in" thing to hide behind other people because you can't have what you want or you may be in trouble or some other personal issue? And to hide behind a child? There is absolutely no excuse for that behavior! While I can feel sorry for them, I cannot excuse their behavior in hiding behind others using a weapon to hold them.
