"A horse slaughtering plant in Roswell is a terrible idea"

-NM Attorney General Gary King

Apparently, bad ideas die hard. This week, almost a year since Valley Meat Company of Roswell applied to open the first horse slaughter facility in the U.S. in over five years, the New York Times reports that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is considering approval of the facility’s request.

This news comes despite widespread state and national outcry last year, including denouncements of horse slaughter from a bipartisan group of New Mexico elected officials. Governor Susana Martinez, Attorney General King, State Land Commissioner Ray Powell, and then-Rep. Martin Heinrich all voiced strong opposition to a New Mexico horse slaughter facility.

In the meantime, the Equine Protection Fund — a crucial component of the growing New Mexican safety net for horses, donkeys, and mules — has expanded its support programs to help the needy animals that might otherwise have been abandoned to the slaughter pipeline. This past week, the Equine Fund marked its 350th equine relieved of suffering through feed assistance, veterinary care, or humane euthanasia. These kinds of programs must be promoted and further expanded, rather than New Mexico regressing to a cruel and outdated slaughter model.

Your voice is urgently needed to help stop a horse slaughter facility from opening in our state, or any state. Please contact Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack immediately with your opposition to a horse slaughter facility in New Mexico.

I have signed it. I also want to remind everyone to be responsible breeders so we prevent having more horses than there are homes for.
Also do not use Premarin, stop supporting an industry that sends foals to slaughter.

thank you Julie - signed ! Reprehensible, anti democratic, anti American, filthy pandering whores from NM. How could they seriously allow this - America was built on the backs of horses. It's not a matter of "belief" that they are our heritage. They are our heritage.

Noted and signed - I am just devastated to say the least - only God will know how much I hate these filthy humans - they are despicable, scum of the earth - they don not have a right to be here. The bloody lot of them should be lined up and used as target practice.

Gladly signed, this is despicable we must stop the horse slaughter plants from opening. Our govt wants to send our wild horses to slaughter and this would make it easier for them to do it,instead of shipping our beautiful wild icons to slaughter.Thank you Julie for posting this very important petition.

" A study published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology highlights the fact that at least one of the drugs regularly given to horses, Phenylbutazone (bute), is not only toxic to humans but a carcinogen.
“Dangerous and deadly side effects began to appear within three years including bone marrow suppression that was fatal in many cases and a hypersensitivity liver syndrome that could culminate in liver failure and death,” stated Ann M. Marini, Ph.D. M.D., the senior author of the study.

Unbelievable! The USDA has been complaining that they don't have enough agents to check the horrible CAFOs and now they want to inspect horse slaughterhouses -which the MAJORITY of Americans don't want. I really wish that we get thousands of signers and that the petition is delivered to Presidient Obama. Sadly, though, he doesn't seem to care much about animals in my opinion. I hope that all the horse rescue groups start a petition as well. We need tons of signatures to get our point across. If you support any horse rescue group - ask them to post a petition on the internet. I get loads of requests DAILY l to halt the tar sands, off shore drilling in Alaska, wolf saving, etc. I think I've been getting saving the wolves petitions over and over again. Yes, I signed them, but we need a barage of to save the horses from slaughter petitions.
I hope you agree.
