According to Reuters, a poll last month showed three quarters of French people interviewed wanted to withdraw from nuclear energy, against 22 percent who backed the nuclear expansion program.

real problem since they get 70-80% of electric power from nuclear and any creation of dams would wreck their shipping and transport economy iff they could afford to build dams which they cannot

This is significant precisely because France is now so nuclear-dependent.

Let's hope they have a government that will take notice!

This is great! I believe they will do it. Hopefully, they'll be a good example to the world of how to use clean, non-nuclear power. It's really not impossible, just maybe a little harder. Germany has also stated that they plan to have all nuclear power plants closed by 2022, as they gradually phase it out(by using renewable resources). I wish we(America) would pay more attention and communicate more with these countries, instead of always thinking our way is best.

little by little there are faint glimmers of hope...

of course most of the examples of energy use defenders always cite aren't as necessary as it seems to some. the garage door openers cited in this article are only needed by the disabled and elderly and we don't need to watch as much TV as most people do, and certainly not on such big and energy wasting screens. and there are many other examples of how much energy consumption can be cut which unfortunately today too many people accept as necessary.

I don't believe this! We worry about the dangers of nuclear power without considering how many people die each year of lung ailments caused by burning coal - to say nothing of all the deadly mining disasters.

People who build such во@ppy cars like Renaults and buggered border security as the Maginot line are whining about nuclear power? LOL!

Nuclear power is unsafe at any speed -- Every nuclear power station ever built was "safe" including Three Mile Island, Chernoble, Fukushima etc...

"According to Reuters, a poll last month showed three quarters of French people interviewed wanted to withdraw from nuclear energy, against 22 percent who backed the nuclear expansion program." -- POWER TO THE PEOPLE.

It doesn't have to be coal Freya, why not wind, geothermal, solar etc? -- Phasing out French dependence on nuclear won't happen overnight but it can and should happen. -- Nuclear power plants/ nuclear weapons have no place on this earth.

good for them.....

its off subject, but I was amazed today when my father-in-law brought up an article he read about how injuries from solar/electric energy are on the rise....its the construction teams....didn't mention the miners, oil well drillers, or civilians from the dirty sources....

Good for them! It's been said that nuclear is safe (yeah right) and cheap, but at what cost to people, animals and the environment? Thanks.
