Mr. Chairman, I rise in opposition to a bill that overturns the scientific finding that pollution is harming our people and our planet.

However, I won't physically rise, because I'm worried that Republicans will overturn the law of gravity, sending us floating about the room.

I won't call for the sunlight of additional hearings, for fear that Republicans might excommunicate the finding that the Earth revolves around the sun.

Instead, I'll embody Newton's third law of motion and be an equal and opposing force against this attack on science and on laws that will reduce America's importation of foreign oil.

This bill will live in the House while simultaneously being dead in the Senate. It will be a legislative Schrodinger's cat killed by the quantum mechanics of the legislative process!

Arbitrary rejection of scientific fact will not cause us to rise from our seats today. But with this bill, pollution levels will rise. Oil imports will rise. Temperatures will rise.

And with that, I yield back the balance of my time. That is, unless a rejection of Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity is somewhere in the chair's amendment pile.

well put!
but then, lets not forget, that scientific facts have been errr 're-defined' / turned-around for decades, and not ONLY by the Rep's
like e.g. (to choose one example from the field that I've studied...) "classifying" (amongst others,) hemp as a "narcotic" ...

That sounds funny, but it's not too far-fetched. After the Corporations get control of all the world's governments and natural resources, natural phenomenon will be next as soon as they can design a pricing scheme that maximizes profitability. Thank you.

LOL! Don't worry though, I'm sure there are mobs of RepubliCON's who will pray that Rep. Edward J. Markey will just let Jesus take care of us..;)

Thanks to MIke for posting this gem! Thanks to Carole for alerting me to it.

Not living in the States, I don't find out about everything that's happening and I am really glad I heard this!

Kudos to Markey! Nice understated manner to drive home message of their madness.

This reminds me of the Texas schoolboard rewriting history for textbooks (Fight the Texas Textbook Takeover - Historical Distortions On Slavery, Separation of Church & State, & More and Don't Let Public School Curricula Be Decided By Theocrats), particularly this cartoon... as well as Scientists Tell Texas: Time to Evolve- "Several leading scientists have sent a letter to the Texas State Board of Education urging board members to reject an amendment that attacks one of evolution's key principles, that all life on Earth is descended from a common ancestor".

And it also brings to mind two of my favorite slogans: "Sticking to the Facts - A Vast Left Wing Conspiracy" & "Science Is Not a Liberal Conspiracy".

This is why some of us here in MA were bitterly disappointed when Markey passed on Ted Kennedy's seat. I so wanted the opportunity to vote for him. He's one bright guy....Thanks for the post!

Loved it. I also enjoyed watching the woman's face behind him while he spoke.

Can't you just imagine Galileo (the "father of modern observational astronomy", the "father of modern physics, the "father of science", and "the Father of Modern Science") turning over in his grave, never having imagined that the Roman Inquisition of the 1600s would morph into the 21st century GOP?

Loved his speach ! I'd hazzard a guess that most of the GOP haven't even heard of Schrodinger.

Science, or should I say nature, got an amendment 40 yrs ago with ridiculous "Daylight Saving Time". I am going to HATE it when we skip one hour in the last March weekend. "Skip one hour", ha!

While on this subject, it would be nice to negotiate the leverage of the peak summer and winter temperatures. That may save a lot of energy. Or something. I am sure that bright, scientific uneducated minds can come with more ideas to laugh on.
