Antidepressants are supposed to work by fixing a chemical imbalance, specifically, a lack of serotonin in the brain. Indeed, their supposed effectiveness is the primary evidence for the chemical imbalance theory.

Thanks Lone!

"But analyses of the published data and the unpublished data that were hidden by drug companies reveals that most (if not all) of the benefits are due to the placebo effect."

Bingo! The most underrated medicine on planet earth: The Human Mind. A Placebo Study to a pharmaceutical company is like a crucifix in satan's face, garlic to a vampire, tax increase on the rich to a republican....it's a form of death to them. It exposes the lie they sell.

Maybe some younger readers are not aware that in the past doctors in general were held in very high esteem in society. From the 50's - 80's there were many TV drama series about doctors. It was a noble and financial rewarding profession that has slowly been eroding to the point that now the opposite is true and in fact can be one of the more stressful. Therefore, many doctors have abandoned their Oaths and pursued the dollar. Doctors are a big reason for the heroin epidemic in the Northeast USA. Yes, it's true pharmaceutical companies offer financial rewards for prescribing (Opioids) more drugs to patients, HOWEVER doctors do not HAVE TO prescribe them. It is a personal/ethical decision on the doctor's part - and many haven't chosen wisely, imo.

"The results of the unpublished trials were known only to the drug companies and the *FDA*, and most of them failed to find a significant benefit of drug over placebo."

The F.D.A. = J.O.K.E

Noted. Thanks, Lone.
Great comment by Randy above. Let's not forget the insurance companies who have been dictating to doctors more and more exactly what they can prescribe. Lots of money changing hands has put many, many patients at risk. Yes, there are also corrupt doctors.

The "side" effects of drugs are often terrifying and far, far worse than the original complaints.
