The dramatic footage captured by a dashboard video camera in the Chelyabinsk region of Russia in the nation's south-central shows what scientists say was a more than 10 ton meteor entering the atmosphere at over 33,000 miles per hour.

I have seen chunks of meteorites but I have never witnessed one falling to earth. In these short videos, you hear the sonic boom, some of the damage, and a hole in a frozen lake where part of the meteorite landed. But I can say, that not knowing what is happening would make the sound more than a little unnerving.

WOW scary! Wonder why they never predicted this meteor before time. It must have been huge - and what a big sonic boom.
Thanks Lynn and also Carrie for passing this along.
