The truth is that European-style welfare states have proved more resilient, more successful at job creation, than is allowed for in America's prevailing economic philosophy.

American capitalists, conservatives all (well maybe mostly) just don't get it! They have been tooting their own horn so much that they cannot hear other voices. Unfortunately, too many people are buying in to their very tired rhetoric! Time to wake up and listen to the correct people like Krugman and Robert Reich.

Krugman is a smart man and tells the truth! The US has a great system for 'Socialism" for business and the wealthy.

Ashley, thank you but I don't understand. Why "bravery"? If we don't discuss matters, how can we come to understanding? How can we fix what is broken in the best way possible? Politicians, especially Republicanus/Teabaggers, have not fixed anything. They have thwarted any attempt at finding solutions because their personal agenda is totally in the way of what's best for the country.

I am a Canadian. I live in a social democracy and hope it stays that way (we really need to dump PM Harper and the Conservative Party on their asses at the next federal election in 2015) because there is a greater regard for the care of the people. Some Americans call us socialists, others communists. Sometimes I think that Joe McCarthy is still alive and well in some Americans. Look at the successes in Northern Europe as mentioned by Krugman.

As FDR once said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself".

I don't know how it is in Canada. But for some people in the U.S., capitalism is basically a religion. To say anything negative about it is to invite the most vicious verbal attacks possible. That's what I meant by brave. I'm glad someone said it though.

Good on you Lynn and Ashley. There needs to be more voices and action speaking up about the pitfalls of capitalisum. Only then can real truths be heard and discussed.

Paul Krugman understands economics better than any right wing politician. And certainly better than the current crop of do nothing Republicans in congress. Over 30 years of the tinkle down economic policies and unfettered capitalism has succeeded in destroying the American middle class. Time for this country to get back to basics, and create and PROTECT jobs right here in the USA.

Krugman has a proven point, even more than he knows: since the Netherlands have moved to the right and adopted a system closely resembling the American free market system for healthcare, energy, transport... (the list is endless, sadly), the Dutch have moved to the bottom of the class in economic growth and innovation. There you have it: welfare states do better, turn it into American style capitalism and you have your country go down the drain.

The Netherlands, should have known that we were too screwed up to copy.

I also hate Reaganomics, Terrie.
