I voted and I still hate Jack Hanna. Is there really anyone who cares what Hanna has to say? Other than David Letterman. That he gets media space is beyond me.

Noted, voted and commented at L.A. Times. This is so disheartening to see that many people in favor of continuing with this exhibit. The AZA has fought this with everthing it has. It is astounding to me with major companies dead broke that they can afford to cough up 1.2 million over 20 years for an elephant exhibit. The AZA is who IDA needs to go after and their stupid Species Survival Programs. I have no doubt that the majority of people voting and leaving comments are affiliated with the zoo or GLAZA.
The only thing I can say is they are very well organized.

I think that people, both pro and con this issue, are jumping on the bandwagon too quickly to make an educatd choice. If anyone has visited the San Diego Wild Animal Park, they've witnessed the fine care given to all the animals there. Sanctuaries are not financially supported up-to-par in todays' economic downfall to meet their sincere needs. Since the L.A. real estate project has been put on 'hold,' I think that a good temporary arrangement for our buddy would be to ask San Diego to care fof him until better arrangments can be made for his health and welfare. Regardless of our personal opinions, he is much safer here in the United States then he would be fending for himself in today's somewhat barren and humanely ruthless jungles.

GLAZA is just a bunch of very rich and therefore powerful fatcats who like to exert their will over others. I'm so tired of these rich and powerful jerks always getting their way. I tried to post a comment, but apparently the LA Times didn't like the comments I made about Jack Hanna, the AZA, the Zoo and why they really want to keep Billy which is for breeding purposes.

EVERYONE THIS IS URGENT!! this poll on this site is rigged. look for yourself. i always check these things out to make sure they are legit, but this one is a scam and thats whay we are losing. see for yourself. vote (any vote, wont matter) then make a mental note of what the numbers are. then hit "back" and vote again (again doesnt matter which way) and look at the numbers agian. literally every 3 or 4 seconds, or maybe just every time you vote....the pro-zoo votes go up by 10 or 11 votes, and the not sure and pro-sanctuary votes dont change. is it really possible that every few seconds, DOZENS of people are visiting this page and voting, and even more unlikely, they Are ALL in favor of the zoo? somethign screwey is going on here. please read this and respond!

forgot to mention someting: in mozilla firefox browser: click "tools" menue, then "clear private data" include cookies, etc. this will let you go back and view the votes agian. take note of how many there are then how many there are ten seconds later. pro-zoo goes up by 100! this is impossible. please vote for "not sure" to be fair (dont keep voting pro-sanctuary, just cause they are cheating doens tmean we should. but someone needs to contact LA times and notify them this thing is rigged.

I have tried twice now to post a comment and they rejected the first one, and I'm waiting to see if my second attempt gets posted. Whenever I have an opportunity like this, I try to educate the readers of the blog about the real reason zoos keep elephants, which is, breeding to make more "oh so cute little baby elephants" who bring in the paying customers. But, the dirty secret is the procedures forced upon the elphants in order to do this breeding. I would like all of us to be familiar with these horrible indignities that are forced on the elephants, the procedure for semen extraction from the males is perverted (in fact, if you google it, some of the links are for pornographic websites!) as well as confusing to say the least and unbelievably unnatural. The procedure for artificial insemination is worse, as it is extremely painful, confusing, degrading. Both procedures require daily enemas because a lot of the procedures are done anally. I don't know about you but I would go crazy if I was restrained (which, of course, the elephants are) and have enemas and ultrasounds and cannulas inserted into me several times a day, day after day after day. This is life of an elephant in the AZA's "Species Survival Plan".

Please everyone let's try to keep this topic hot! Billy's future is hanging in the balance. I can't believe with over ten million members that they are outvoting us in this poll. I just cannot understand why the participation is so down. I thought this was a place for really making a difference and it seems people have just gone elsewhere. I am very disappointed.

Things will never change for animals if there is this kind of apathy. Just look at him standing behind those chains!!!!! People that are willing to stay the distance are the only way he is ever going to have a better life and get out that place!
