There are an estimated 300-500 Sberian, or Amur tigers, remaining in the wild. In captivity there are 400 or so. In the 1940's, that number was down to twenty, and the species was very close to extinction.

I don't want to rain on everyone's parade, but I cannot help wondering how long it will last. I hope it is only the beginning and that both Russia and China will see the advantages of keeping these magnificent animals alive. Now they must look at protecting them and if possible releasing some from captivity in order to increase the gene pool. Thanks BarbCat it is always nice to hear positive news.

Good news. I do hope Allan is wrong but sadly such measures can be reversed at the whim of politicians.

Thanks BarbCat, This sounds like good news by reading other people's comments. I couldn't open story. It keeps saying "Cannot find Internet Explorer". It's probably my dying computer. Anyway, Woo-Hoo!! for the Tigers.
