A new study says the artificial sweeteners in soda can cause serious health problems, including weigh gain. Is that enough to make you give up Diet Coke?

I quit using artificial sweeteners and any products containing them on the advice of my physician. They cause migraines and aggravate digestive problems associated with fibromyalgia. I used to get migraines at least once a week. Now I might get one or two a year.

Is anyone surprised that artificial sweeteners are - well, artificial? I sounds like everyone here has been aware and "canned" them long ago (yes, pun intended).

These drinks, - diet, zero or regular - should only ever be used as a treat, not on a regular basis!

So very happy I don't drink any sodas anymore. Used to but quit when quit smoking - both better on the health and on the budget.

These days WATER is dangerous. It needs to be purified water.

I don't drink sodas.

I could never develop a taste for diet soda. I always get that after taste from the artificial sweetners.

I know I'm taking an unpopular stand here, but I'll stick to my diet drinks thank you very much. I have a family history of diabetes, and the KNOWN risks of excess sugar consumption (diabetes, obesity, tooth decay, gingivitis, etc) take precedence over any POTENTIAL risks associated with the consumption of artificial sweeteners.

If sugar was a new food item and had to go through FDA testing like other new supplements, it would never be approved for human consumption.

All that being said, if you want to stick to water, that's great, but don't touch the bottled stuff. Tap water is just fine in most areas.

My mother developed a weakening of her bones by an excessive drinking of Diet Coke. She has the bones of 90 year old woman, alhtough she is 72.

I stopped drinking diet soda years ago. The carbonation bothered me. I drink green tea mostly now.

Noted. I got that horrible aftertaste, too, after I drank a couple years ago. So I banned "diet-everything" from my house. Nice to read that all this diet stuff wasn't such a great innovation after all.

If I want something cold and bubbly but without sugar, I would have a Perrier.

Only drink a little of fruit-and-water mixes, sweetened with natural sweetener (Stevia) . But it'll only take a little time before the reports come in that this is toxic in humans too.
