Shapira is among the few Israelis to have declared support for the Palestinian-led call for boycott, divestment & sanctions (BDS) against Israel. He has also been attacked by the Israeli military for attempting to sail towards and break the siege of Gaza.

Combattants for Peace are doing good work - and dialogue is important, even if there is need for more space to deal with the inequalities. It is people like Shapira, who have integrity, who start to prepare a more level playing field. Good for them. And much courage.

Thanks for posting, Carrie

I think we would see more of this from Israelis if they didn't live in a cultural of extreme intimidation and discrimination against those who disagree with the government. And they call Israel a democracy.

" To become a refuser, a conscientious objector, is a big step. This one now is to realize that it’s not about you. It’s not about me. My life, with all respect, with little problems here and there is beautiful compared to the people who are massacred in Gaza. The next step for me — not for all the people in these organizations, many of them didn’t want to make this step — is to realize that we need to actually join the struggle for liberation."

I wish that more Israelis would follow this brave man.

I thought "there she goes again " with the anti-jew postings.---where she finds them is Palestinian propaganda against the jews and doesn't even know if it is really true. probably not. . Media. Newspaper crossword puzzles are another tool in the Palestinian propaganda war against Israel.

The volume of antisemitic literature published in the Arab world, and the authority of its sponsors, seemed to suggest that classical antisemitism had become an essential part of Arab intellectual life, , and to a degree that has been compared to Nazi Germany ]

RRB: What’s your relationship with the BDS movement?

YS: I’m a member of Boycott from Within — people from Israeli society who support the boycott just like white activists in South Africa supported the boycott against apartheid. It’s not a big group but this is the seed of future coexistence. Now the word coexistence makes you feel … not so comfortable. Let’s talk about co-resistance. Let’s struggle together. Let’s resist the policies of apartheid. Let’s resist the policy of racism together — and then we can coexist.

I look at the guidelines of the BDS movement, and I feel totally comfortable. They have three major goals: to end apartheid for Palestinians within the 1948 borders; to end the control over Gaza and the West Bank; and to promote the right of return of the millions ofPalestinian refugees around the world.

It’s a common agreement with all lefties that the occupation is bad, it should end. You don’t have to be a very radical Israeli to support that. It’s also common to believe there is no real equality for Palestinians citizens of Israel. But to promote the right of return touches the very notion of a Jewish state. Even to the very progressive lefty Israeli, it’s something hard. It’s almost like you have to go through an emotional endeavor to battle with some Zionist remains inside you to realize that you can’t have peace and freedom with someone worth more than someone else. That’s why we’re not waiting anymore for people inside Israel.

Thank-you Carrie.

RRB: You’ve now spent almost as many years as an activist as you did in the military. What sustains you? Are there any hopeful signs?

YS: Even though I do things like for example, participate in the flotilla to Gaza and pay a little bit by being a few days in jail, it’s surprising how many times walking in the street I meet someone I didn’t see for years and they come and hug you and say thank you. We represent things that people think even though they are not radicalized to the full extent. So it’s not just a little group of lunatic people.

And if you go to campuses today in the US the atmosphere is totally different than it was ten years ago. I toured different times in the States from 2004 on, and every time I see a different attitude and it changed for the good. Many of the activists in the Palestine committees are Jewish students. Their parents were supporting AIPAC and the right-wing Jewish lobbies, but the second generation is with the Palestinians, working together side by side.

In 2005 when I did a lecture tour, Jewish Voice for Peace had seven chapters, Today they have more than forty chapters. They represent the future and the new generation of Jews in the US.

The BDS movement is not waiting for the politicians. Millions of people in Europe, in the US, in the rest of the world support us. Maybe compared to Israeli Jews, I’m still a minority, but overall, in the world, there is growing support. And it’s not against Jews and it’s not against Israelis. It’s for future mutual existence in this piece of land. And for the question of one state or two states — there is already one state. The only question is whether it will remain an apartheid state or if it will to be an equal place for everyone.

What a brave man this Yonatan Shapira is. We can only hope that more Israeli will want to listen to what he has to say and that the government will not silence him by imprisonment or worse.

carol R, if you are a member of the BDS, why are you using a computer and a mobile phone? Or does your BDS only extend to items you DON'T use? Will you refuse to use a defibrillator? Did you refuse vaccines? Will you refuse cancer or cardiac treatment or take various drugs? Remember that for such a small proportion of society Jews produce a large percentage of research. In fact, your military rely on Israel for their protections and designs.

In fact, none of you anti-Semites should be here at all with your BDS but then you must all be lying hypocrites. You lie when you say you support BDS and you are a hypocrite to use Israeli medical and scientific research and products.

Get over yourself Penny. Not ALL of the mentioned items originate in Israel.

carrie, shows how ill informed you are, many inventions that you use today such as polio vaccines, defibrillators and lasers were invented by Jews and as you regard them as scum you should touch them!

HERE IT IS a short compiled list of the major items you need to nix quickly in Boycott ing the JEWS

Part ONE --- – Health --- MEDICAL

Destroy all personal medication. Israel’s Teva Pharmaceuticals, the largest generic drugs company in the world, will have manufactured many of your medicines. Staff with the following illnesses will need to take specific precautions.

This means you’ll need to dump any and all medication or treatments for Cancer, AIDS and HIV, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Epilepsy, Liver disease, Emphysema, and Myeloma. You shouldn’t undergo surgeries that require a surgical laser, heart stents, or use any method of treatment which utilizes Israeli patented methods. I hope you’re still able to find a hospital that doesn’t use any of those.

You’ll also need to dispose of any catheters, steroid creams and non-steroid alternatives to allergies, dyslexic reading systems, or artificial hearts. Most antibiotics will need to be removed from your cabinet as well.

Reject all products from the USA. Analysis conducted in a typical US state shows that Israeli innovations were responsible for $2.4 billion in direct revenue to that state’s economy in 2009 and generated nearly 6,000 jobs.

Part TWO – Technology

Step 1. Remove all Intel Pentium and Celeron computer processor chips from personal computers (desktops, laptops and notebooks) as these were either developed or manufactured in Israel.

Note that the revolutionary new Ivy Bridge processor will be manufactured in Israel. Any computers running the Windows XT operating system must be turned off immediately as this was developed in Israel. All current Microsoft operating systems are not to be used as Microsoft is heavily reliant on its Israel R&D centre.

Step 2. Any computers that still work need to have their anti-virus software and personal firewalls removed as this technology originated in Israel. The organisation’s firewall will also need to be switched off. Staff should no longer open external emails as most of these will be infected with viruses. No outgoing emails can be sent. The algorithm (code) that’s used today for sending e-mails, was made by an Israeli who worked at the Ben-Gurion University in Be’er-Sheva in 1980.

Step 3. Discard all mobile phones, as this technology was developed in Israel, where the first mobile phones were manufactured. Mobile chip technology from a single Israeli company has now been installed in over 100 million devices. Only top-level staff may retain mobile phones for emergency situations. However the use of SMS (Texting) is expressly forbidden as this facility was developed in Israel. No 4G devices can be used, as the chipset is Israeli.

Step 4. Turn off your voice-mail service and delete any recorded messages. Israeli companies invented the voice-mail system. If someone you do not know answers your phone-call, then hang up. Israeli call-centres and call-centre technology is in widespread operation in the UK.

Step 5. Before accepting any printed material, check that the supplier has not used the Israeli device that might have saved up to 50% of the ink used.

Step 6. At home, do not use Facebook as many in-built and add-on applications are Israeli-developed. Do not watch videos on the Internet as the platform used to upload them may be from AOL and hence from an Israeli company. Do not use the Internet to search for answers to your questions as this may involve use of an Israeli-developed search engine. Better to remain unenlightened.

Step 7. On your TV or home entertainment centre, do not use Video On Demand (VOD) to watch movies as you may inadvertently see an advert displayed using Israeli software. Do not purchase any games devices as these are likely to use Israeli technology.

Step 8. Do not read books using an e-book as this may contain Israeli technology. Do not use data storage as it may have been developed at Israel’s storage technology R&D center.

Step 9. Do not buy an electric car as it is likely to be powered with an Israeli battery or use Israeli developed charging mats. Continue to sit in traffic knowing that you are polluting the environment and financing oil-rich despotic regimes.

lona, YOU folks don't believe it, but Israel IS a democracy with free speech as every country SHOULD be.

We don't imprison or *worse* people for speaking their minds.

carrie, oh yes, they ABSOLUTELY do/did originate in Israel. Apparently, you didn't *bother to read* the article I recently posted; Israel tops even the U.S. and the UK in the fields of science and technology (and quite a few others!).

Then again, why on earth would You and Yours EVER read an article about the tremendous impact Israeli innovations have on your life. You couldn't live through one day without using a dozen Israeli products or concepts. You couldn't even flush your toilet.

PS, Hate to tell you but Penny's list is only of the MAJOR items you use ~ there are dozens more!

No Barbara, I rarely even look at what you post, much less read them. Unlike you, I don't troll care2 looking for articles posted by others so I can argue with them. You post Israeli propaganda I'm not interested in.

While it is true that the items on your 'list' do indeed come from Israel, ~ that does not mean they come exclusively from Israel. Many countries produce duplicate items. I think you should be able to understand that.

If you don't read anything but imipecac, jasmeara, and mongoscheiss how will you know what to boycott? How about your computer? Do you anything about your hard/software? Do you listen to music? Do you flush your toilet?

I'm not attacking, unless proving your lies and insinuations incorrect constitutes attacking you. Your posts aren't really interesting because they're extremely redundant....but they ARE amusing.

Noted. Thanks for posting, Carrie. I do appreciate reading these facts. It is easier for my heart to go out to those who are and have been so oppressed, like the Palestinians. It seems they live next door to a bunch of warmongering bullies. Palestinians have lost more children and families to Israeli missiles than their hearts can bear.

Fmr. Pres. Jimmy Carter was on The Daily Show and stated a simple solution (1/12/15). Israel must withdraw from the West Bank, Gaza & E. Jerusalem, and the Palestinians must commit themselves without equivocation to the freedom of Israel to live in peace alongside of them. This would be a great start.
