TEXT OF ARTICLE:

An explosion rocked an East Village building in Manhattan Thursday, causing the building to collapse and sending plumes of smoke down Second Avenue.

Injuries were reported at the building, which is located at 125 Second Ave. near St. Mark’s Place. An FDNY spokesperson told The Huffington Post that one injured person was transported to an area hospital. Medics were treating at least six people at the scene and two firefighters were potentially injured, the New York Daily News reported.

"I heard a big sound and then we saw fire and smoke coming from the roof and then police came driving in," Shameem Noor, a cashier at Veselka restaurant nearby, told HuffPost. "There was black smoke everywhere."

"It was like a bomb," Aleksandr Srdi, 32, told DNAinfo. "Everyone was like what's going on? People from Starbucks were yelling to get back inside and they were trying to lock the doors."

The building could be seen fully engulfed in flames just before 4 p.m., and a fire department spokesman said the fire spread to at least two other buildings.

Miles Barber, a cook at Mighty Quinn's restaurant nearby, told HuffPost that the explosion felt "like an earthquake." He and fellow employees evacuated the restaurant as hundreds of onlookers crowded the streets. Police closed off 6th and 7th streets near the explosion.

The cause wasn't immediately clear, but authorities said that it was consistent with a gas explosion.

ABC News reports:

The FDNY arrived on the scene to find a restaurant on the lower level collapsed and smoke pluming throughout the building. Then flames began shooting through the roof and quickly spread to a neighboring building.
Firefighters were pouring water onto the flames, but they had to pull back due to the intensity, fire officials expected both buildings would eventually fall.
Evacuations were underway at all adjoining buildings, and charred rubble littered the sidewalk.
The incident comes just days after New York City marked the one-year anniversary of a deadly building explosion in Harlem. A gas leak caused the blast, leveling two buildings, killing eight people and injuring dozens of others.

This is a breaking news story. Check back for updates.

Mitch, Nyack meant that since Milca's friend was female, ~ she was not one of the dead.

I'm so sorry. It just does sound odd if you don't read ALL the comments. It's so easy to misinterpret things, and I hate it when I cause the problem. No one thinks those things about you Nyack, ~ unless they are mean spirited and/or angry. Please forgive.

Hey - don't let one hyper-sensitive guy's comment throw you into a spin, Nyack & Carrie ...

You both have the same "friendly" trolls throwing insults your way all the time, it's their only way of trying to hide that your comments are rooted in humanity ... (And your "take off" of them made me smile, Nyack ...)

I don't know what Mitchell's problem is .. probably just hadn't read the previous comments carefully ... Actually, don't know if this is a guy being hyper-sensitive or what ... profile says "female" ... then "About Me Old white male, angry about idiocy," .... But that is his/her issue ....

Most of us know you stand tall on human rights so had a specific reason for your comment (even if one hadn't taken in Milca's comment just before) Nyack - Mitchell owes an apology, but probably hasn't come back to see the response ...

It sounds like a lot of people are facing loss of their homes - and possessions. Good luck to them, I hope their insurance will treat them well, that they'll have immediate help with shelter & essentials, and that they are surrounded by supportive friends & families as they cope with this shock.

Is the core problem one of inadequate safety controls?
