South Sudan's civil war has been a disaster for humans and animals alike. Soldiers on both sides have turned the slaughter of giraffes and other animals into an industry.Conservationists say the "charismatic megafauna" are nearly wiped out here.

Ok don't want to look.
I have tried to be very careful when commenting on Cecil to also bring up all wildlife that are killed. I'm sure in some comments I have forgot to but this whole concept of trophy hunting, hunting in general sickens me.
Thank you Carrie

Comparison is invidious and should be avoided. Although one can be outraged by the wasteful and sociopathic death of one or many, the issue is in each case the culture and the individuals who do th ekilling.

While scientists have often claimed that the preservation of species trumps the preservation of individuals, no species will survive if individuals are killed.

If you kill small populations, further isolating others, you contribute to the loss of entire species. In this way the gray wolf was murdered over two centuries, as were many other species.

Ceil is a member of an endangered species, yet the loss of his genes and his social position protecting intraspecific peace has a value extending both to genetic diversity, and to other lives of his kind .

Should it happen to any close to you, you may discover that one is enough to ravage your life, and as someone who has dealt with mortality, I maintain that his individual life mattered in a way that your own might to yu. Forty hours with a crossbow bolt in you, with no hope of ever getting it removed. Then a bullet to your head.

compare that.

War is bad news, period. Nothing is ever gained with war, except the most powerful have their vanity and egoism reinforced.

Cecil is the tip of the iceberg in terms of animals slaughtered, both as a commodity to be prized by some (Trophy hunters, fucking morons), and as chattel / livestock for our consumption.

How we treat our animals, wild or otherwise says a lot about our humanity and ability to develop, cultivate ourselves and learn.

If one doesn't compare, one doesn't learn anything.

Thanks for sharing Carrie!

I fully agree with Darren; War costs so many lifes of humans and other living beings which die senseless. In front of this we need not even more perverted and degenerated hunters to fill their bloodthirst by paying money for it and to fulfill their greed with the trade of wildlife trophys and ivory!

I believe we are all aware of the constant slaughter of these beautiful animals. Cecil was protected, and what his killer did was a crime, so he needs to be punished. I believe ALL the murderers & abusers of our animals should be punished. Cecil was well known, and that is why his story has touched so many people, because we knew him. His killer is a low-life subhuman who has committed a heinous crime and should be punished by the Government of Zimbabwe, where he committed that crime, and I hope they show him NO MERCY!!! Did he show Cecil & his family any mercy??~~NO HE DID NOT!!! And anyone who believes that he thought what he was doing was legal is as crazy as he is~~& that pretty damned crazy in my book. We have no right to take the life of any being on this planet. But, there are those who do not respect others' lives, be it human or animal. Every living being has a right to live without fear, without harm, just live their lives in peace & happiness. But, there are those murderering idiots who will now allow that. They're the ones who should be gotten rid of~~one way or another.

I guess it's no wonder why all my Twitter followers and Facebook friends ignore almost everything I post. The world's an horrific place and all I do is remind everybody of of it all the time. I get sick of myself too. We are human beings and the most intelligent creatures on earth, right? We are capable of cultivating enough food to feed everyone on earth and we can vaccinate everyone so we can stay healthy and manufacture clothing to wear in every kind of weather and Bla, bla, bla... But what we do best is destroy. Why? Because it's easy, I guess. Because it's profitable for the people in authority. Power is money. Money is power! And the powerful people with most of the money, manipulate the masses and don't give a damn about anything but more profit. So they keep manufacturing more and more weapons and supply them to the various people where chaos is in abundance, where they can come in and rape the land and take all of the profit from it no matter how destructive. But the main idea is destroy, destroy, destroy! - The more we evolve, the more destructive we become.

There are some people who engage in this slaughter because they are poor and look for income and the world isn't doing enough to help eradicate and change that. The Clinton Foundation is one under criticism but at least they hire 2000 people and 89% of the money does go to charity as stated to improve global health and wellness, increase opportunity for women and girls, reduce childhood obesity, create economic opportunity and growth, and help communities address the effects of climate change. -

The trophy hunters---need to be shamed and the hunting stopped.

trophy hunting and canned hunts are ridiculous. Very difficult to understand why anyone would want the head of a magnificent animal staring down on them. Analogy to tiny penis comes to mind. Fearful little boys taking down a large dangerous animal...then getting to brag and impress beer drinking bozos in the recreation room. Beats bragging about the cars in the garage or number of notches on the bedpost.
Real men don't shoot animals with guns. Real men shoot amazing nature photos with cameras and post them on the web for everyone to enjoy.

I have often said that human intelligence is an oxymoron. One animal is not more important than another but more of some spices are killed than others. I see reports of starved and dying animals all the time and there re those who are rescued but in the back of my mind I think of all the others who do not get rescued and have been killed or are still suffering at the hands of humans. Cecil's death was a big tragedy and his story happened to make it into media around the world. It is no more tragic that the elephants and all the others who are killed every day for "sport" and greed.
Ou are so right Jeff. We are supposedly the most intelligent species but really we are the only ones who got to vote on that one. In reality we are the most unnatural and invasive species-freaks of nature-on the planet. there are many doing good things but we are (I include myself in this group) out numbered by those in the BLM, factory farms, Monsanto, etc, etc. who just don't give a damn plus the many individuals who also don't know and maybe just don't care to inconvenience themselves.

Jeff, you're not only reminding people that the world is a terrible place, but you're reminding them of their culpability...their non-action, not recycling, not protesting in any way, not writing/calling their elected officials. On other words, they really don't want to be bothered, or they'd be doing something. Thanx Carrie.

war is terrible for all vulnerable lives: plant, animals, human. to some extent, if we enforce law properly and seriously, we may avoid quite a lots of loss. unfortunately, we often fail, don't we?

thank you Carrie

War is suffering beyond comprehension+religion is always to blame. Animals in wars+disasters suffer the most period. They are always forgotten-butchered or just simply neglected. We're the biggest mistake to ever inhabit this planet+animals are the most beautiful thing about earth--that's just hoe i see it.
