A recent report by the UN Committee Against Torture puts into stark relief the absurd situation we are now in, with Israel chairing a committee that is responsible for, among other things, calling attention to Israel's violations of human rights.

Young men on the receiving end of a barrage of abuse, stones and fire-bombs, and in constant fear of being killed, that there are going to be human rights abuses - as in any conflict - it would be naive to think otherwise.

The term 'torture' refers to - hit with batons, slapping, throttling, prolonged shackling, stress positions, sleep deprivation and threats.

Not all allegations were or could be verified, as the Jerusalem Post pointed out, it could false allegations of torture to gain kudos amongst their own people. Though Jewish detainees also made allegations of mistreatment against the police.

According to Amnesty, there have been over a thousand complaints since 2001.

Before Care2 Jihad turn up and this develops into another Israel-kicking session maybe Carrie would like to post the corresponding data for Hamas, the PA, Assad's Syria, Iraq, Iran, Turkey etc so we can draw valid comparisons.
(There are a few Western countries who are hardly whiter than white, now that I mention it)

Though any abuse & violence is wrong, no matter who is doing it.

Thank you for posting this article, Carrie, however dark and depressing it is. There are so many striking passages which call out to be quoted that I might just as well quote the whole article, so I won't. I just hope that people will take the trouble of actually reading it and making up their own minds.

I'll limit myself to remarking on how the UN seems to sinking away in a quagmire of bureaucracy and politics where one committee doesn't know (or simply ignores?) what the other committee is doing. It's very disturbing to read that while the Committee on Torture brings out a damning report calling attention to Israel’s violations of human rights and its programmatic colonization of the OPT and then elects Israel to chair the “Legal Committee.”, one of the United Nations’ permanent committees, having it chaired by a man who is of the opinion that Israel should annex all West Bank settlements and “uninhabited areas.”, bear no responsibility to Palestinians in the West Bank, locked up in the remaining unannexed towns, and make Palestinians ineligible for citizenship. So much for Israel being a world leader in international law and in fighting terrorism, and eager to share their knowledge with the world, then.

Lona stated it very well above and I agree.
Also: "Since 2000, Israeli forces and extremists have killed more than 2,045 Palestinian children, including 551 in 2014 alone, the majority during Israeli military offenses on the Gaza Strip...."
"....Palestinian children suffer disproportionately under Occupation already."

it is abysmal!!

I hope one day there will be justice!!
Free Palestine, end all U.S. aid to Israel, now!
End the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine, land thefts, and siege of Gaza!

Justice, now! The state of Israel's crimes against humanity must be brought before the International criminal Court.

Yes, I'd like to see the data for Hamas, the PA, Assad's Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Turkey torturing Palestinian Youth, too?!

And 'Carrie?' Would that be the same Carrie that was brutally murdered - being run over by and Israeli bulldozer?? Oh, my mistake, that was Rachel Corrie.

Speak for yourself. Replace 'We've' with the word "I've" to make your sentence closer to the truth.

Have a nice plate of victimization for breakfast again this morning, John? Maybe you should write an email to the anti-semitic staff at Salon.com

The TORTURE of CHILDREN:

' The treatment of juvenile detainees is one of the concerns specifically mentioned in the UNCAT report, which draws attention to the fact that despite the laws Israel itself has passed that would seem to afford protection to youth under arrest,
these laws often go unenforced when it comes to Palestinian minors. Here is the relevant passage:

While taking note of the provisions of the Youth Law (Trial Punishment and Modes of Treatment) 5731-1971 relating to the arrest and detention of minors and of positive developments in the Juvenile Military Justice System applicable in the West Bank, including the establishment of a Juvenile Military Court in 2009, the increase of the age of majority from 16 to 18 years for the purposes of adjudication in 2011, and other measures providing for safeguards and guarantees for minors, the Committee is concerned at

reports that such legal developments are not always implemented in practice,
in particular with respect to Palestinian minors accused of security-related offences.
In this respect, it is concerned at allegations of many instances in which Palestinian minors were exposed to torture or ill-treatment, including to obtain confessions;
were given confessions to sign in Hebrew, a language they do not understand;
and were interrogated in the absence of a lawyer or a family member.
The Committee is also concerned that many of these children, like many other Palestinians, are deprived of liberty in facilities located in Israel thus hindering access to visits of relatives who live in the OPT. '

The TORTURE of CHILDREN. [As if just TORTURE wasn't bad enough!]
The TORTURE. Of CHILDREN. Of MINORS. JUVENILES. If they are Palestinian.....

What Effect do you think TORTURING CHILDREN has ON THE TORTURER?
On the Torturer's Family? On the Torturer's Community?
On HIS Children, or future Children....

Should the words "TORTURE" and "CHILDREN" go together in a sentence.....

Randy: I was going to respond in kind, but frankly I wouldn't want to come down to your level.

Yes, Carrie should post the humans rights abuses of Hamas, Assad's Syria, Iraq, Iran, Turkey etc. if not for anything else to avoid the charge of Jew-bashing by just singling out Israel.

Mistreatment of prisoners by Israel is wrong. For sure, some or most of the allegations must be true.
Mistreatment of prisoners by anybody is wrong. Torturing, hanging/executing by firing squad (Palestinian) prisoners, without giving them a free and fair trail, is wrong - as Evelyn's friends Hamas did only the other week. [Strange that neither Carrie, Evelyn or Sam started a thread of protest about it]

Gents . . . grow up.

In a healthy world, one wouldn't have "prisoners" and/or the mistreatment of prisoners. We're talking schoolchild level politics of Cowboys and Indians in the playground.

Maybe "Joan of Arc", were she alive, could get this across to you.. but no one succeeds, with your unwillingness to see people, equally, when it comes to Palestinians people and children.

'..bashing' and criticizing, condemning, are 2 different things, which I am almost certain, you are well aware of, but go for it..

Cry me a river.. ..let's call a spade a spade; the oppressive, apartheid, Israeli regime is no "'victim', here.

It is the dehumanizing, racist, victimizer - abuser of Palestinian human rights and perpetrator of Palestinian human rights violations and war crimes, under International Law.

Revolting mendacious, whinging, again, as usual.

No self respecting person could rationalize Israeli crimes without a large dose of arrogance and/or ignorance, cowardice or pathological denial, and try to shovel the dirt under the rug.
My view, thank you.

Jess: A bit rich isn't it. You're always on here calling for:
*the dissolution of Israel
*for the Palestinians to 'get their land back' [Though clarify please, is that the huge areas of land the Arabs happily SOLD to the Jewish settlers at extortionate prices or the land the Arabs lost after launching failed genocidal wars against the Jews?]
*for an end to foreign aid to Israel - though aid to countries with infinitely worse records of human rights abuses that's fine apparently!
*for an end to the "siege" of Gaza? [It can't be a 'siege' if they have a land border with Egypt can it! Hundreds of lorries of supplies cross into Gaza from Israel every day. It's only 'dual use' items that are restricted i.e. that Hamas can - and do - use to build rockets and terror tunnels. Why not call for Hamas to stop firing rockets and building terror tunnels?????]
*Are you calling for the dissolution of Pakistan, the Muslim state created on the demand of Muslim nationalists at the same time as the creation of Israel? No. Unlike the threats against the Jews, nobody was threatening to "exterminate" all Muslim in India.
*Are you calling for the 18 million people violently displaced (as a result of the creation of Pakistan) from their ancestral homes 'get their land back'??? No.
*Palestinians (only the other week) were abducted, tortured, denied fair trial, hanged, executed by firing squad by Palestinians - and you say nothing.
*Palestinian peace activists were publicly executed by Hamas as 'a warning' during the Gaza Conflict, you said nothing.
*The gross human rights abuses committed by Assad's Syria, by Iran, by Iraq, by the Turks, by the Saudis etc- again you say nothing.

That's not 'Jew-bashing'???? That's "seeing things equally" is it Jess????

No-one is defending Israeli human rights abuses. Or anyone's human rights abuses.
Though you and your friends here seem to be operating on a 'one rule for one, one rule for another basis'....
And after all, we are only having these 'conversations' because you and your friends constantly post Jew bashing/Israel bashing racial hatred threads on Care2.
If you were posting racial hatred threads and posts against Hindus or Sikhs or whoever, I'd still be opposing you.

Thanks Carrie and thanks to Lona for your excellent comment, with which I absolutely agree.

I think it is a bit childish to want to compare the HR records of "the only democracy in the Middle East" with totalitarian and absolutely un-democratically ruled countries or with organizations like the PA which doesn't even have a country ... but if it serves a purpose I guess anything goes no matter how absurd.

As a side note and just for the records: "the huge areas of land the Arabs happily SOLD to the Jewish settlers at extortionate prices" amount to just under 7% of the land allotted by the UN to the State of Israel (acc. to the IL Stat Off in Jerusalem). And the extra land which amounts to 22% was stolen from the Palestinians between Dec. 47 and June 48 under the Operation of "Plan Dalet". Truth and facts have an ugly habit of not wanting to go away ...

The boundaries were drawn up along population concentrations, which is why the original designated 1947 borders were such an unusual shape.

Truth and facts have an ugly habit of not wanting to go away. Indeed not.

Truth is had it not been for Arab threats to exterminate all Jews, there could and would have been a united iindependent Palestine.

Had it not been for the Arabs starting and losing the war of 1948, whereby the Arabs intended to commit genocide against the Jews and the newly founded Israel, we would still have the two states within their UN designated borders.

Had it not been for Egypt annexing Gaza Province from the Palestinians and the Jordanians annexing West Bank from the Palestinians (King Hussein of Jordan was opposed to an independent Arab Palestine) - far more land than the Israelis, victims of a planned genocidal war, took - Palestine would not have disappeared from the map.

"What emerges is a deeply troubling picture of the situation of Palestinian youths and children living in the occupied territories. Despite Israel’s adoption of the amendment on youth mention above, it would appear that those protections would not apply to Palestinians living in the occupied territories. We have only to think of the attacks on Gaza and the arrests and killing of Palestinian youths on the West Bank to see a dangerous form of immunity protecting Israel from being held responsible. We therefore have a formula for the perpetuation of violence and death, as more and more children and young people, already living at the heart of despair, are being pushed to react and then met with even greater violence and abuse."
