So it looks like the owners fled & CFS & RSPCA stepped in to save a few animals.

40 Animals perished.

So terrible! I cannot understand these monsters leaving the animals to die such a horrible and painful death. Thank you CFS and RSPCA for saving the rest. Thanks AniMae.

I'm so glad that some survived. Thanks AniMae

Panic brings out the worst in people. But I'd like to see measures in place that could help reduce risks of similar situations ... Primarily, clear and precise plans for action when bushfires like this threaten an institutions where the inmates cannot escape the flames without help. Such plans should be obligatory, & drills required so everyone knows automatically what they need to do. That is essential to counter the kind of panic reaction that clearly hit these owners of the kennels

“We’re trying to come to terms with what has happened to us.”

Happened to Hicks and his wife? . . . or happened to the animals? . . . or both?

When something like a bush fire happens, often people panic and their first instinct is to save themselves. I was not there and it is not my place to judge. Let a properly lead investigation determine what ahppened and what should have happened.

Petition signed earlier.

Never forget the fires here in San Diego in 2007. I put dog crates in my truck to rescue some.
This just has me with falling tears still at the thought.
TU for the update dear. I still want all those precious little souls alive and the humans toasted.

Just noticed these 2 comments on the petition;

Jennifer Maiden, SW Jan 06, 23:20 # 1,703
The PR campaign being waged in defence of this kennel (now referred to as "The Family"), including soliciting donations, is obscuring the terrible facts. Negligence, tardiness and callousness must be investigated and prevented. This petition seems one of the few outlets for objective protest against this dreadful event and the negligence which caused it.

Kit Toohey, SW Jan 06, 23:04 # 1,699
What is also horrifying is that the owners of the business have set up a successful press campaign resulting in the ABC declaring 'an outpouring of support" for them. They are actually receiving donations. Blood money. The only guilt they seem to feel is about grieving pet owners, who might sue them, not at all for the appalling suffering of the animals themselves. Some of the pet owners have ostensibly defended this appalling kennel and one can only assume this is because of trying to rationalise guilt they feel at having left their animals at such an appalling place.

Will have to look more into these claims.

Thank you for the update AniMae. I cannot bear to think of the suffering and fear those poor dogs suffered so instead I will think of them playing together at Rainbow Bridge maybe with the dogs who lost their lives to an arsonist at the Manchester Dog's Home fire.

My opinion on Tea Tree Gully Kennel is that they're responsible for the deaths of these dogs, They had no business working with animals, if they cant be responsible for them. That means 24-7 & through any challenge, they f*cked up & charges need 2 be filed! Well done 2 the Fire Fighters, kicking ass & taking names. Thanks AniMae

God this is just heartbreaking! These bastard rotten &^&*(@&^@ owners of this boarding kennel need to be locked up in a burning room so they can feel what these poor animals felt, the pain, terror and appalling unimaginable suffering. Let no mercy be shown to them, they must be made to suffer!

The owners of the kennel should have had a plan to evacuate all the animals in the event of such a natural disaster. It was negligent of them not to.

It appears from the photos that some of the building had not burned. I said it before, why could they not of at the very least opened the doors to the cages allowing the animals the chance to save their own lives. The animals could of ran to a safer part of the building or out the door and away from the fire.

Yes, panic sets in on people, but they also had an obligation to those in their care to protect them. This is what did happen in Katrina, at one Nursing Home the Elders were left to drown.....some still tied to their beds. Do we want the teachers to flee a school and leave the children behind? Do we want Dr's and Nurse's to flee and let the patients suffer. Also in the Katrina flooding there were Dr's and Nurses who stayed and moved as many patients as they could to higher floors......time didn't allow all to be saved but most of the patient were. Heroic measures taken by some, constantly using their hands to keep air in the lungs of those whose machines had stopped due to no electric and back up battery died too. Lives saved until helicopters could vacate them out.

So some dogs and cats could of been saved.......did they not try to save some of the animals? Heartbreaking.

Indeed, if brush fires are a fixture of an area then better training and plans should be at all facilities that have a lot of animals and/or people. I had signed the petition.

Noted. Thanks AniMae. The people who were the owners of the kennel had taken on a crucial responsibility and owed it to their charges to try and save them when faced with any danger. They will hopefully be investigated and not allowed to hold such a position again, shame on them for not trying to help those poor animals left without help and no doubt in great fear and distress. There to me is no excuse they should have tried to do something. God Bless all the animals that perished.

The owners should have had a plan in place (action) for any situation that may have arisen, such as fire, or floods. Personally, I would have done anything/everything in my power to save the animals first. Thank you AniMae,for this update.

Signed previously and noted now, thanks AniMae for posting.

The CFS encourage everyone to have a bushfire plan in place, well before any fire arrises. Their actions in rescuing or recovering the surviving animals is exemplory and to be congratulated. Much respect & thanks.

I don't think there is a mandatory requirement in Victorian law for a business to have a bushfire plan in place. It would be worth consideration by the Victorian Parliament.

According to abc.net.au/news, three-quarters of the dogs were saved and many have already been reunited with their owners. Tea Tree Gully Boarding Kennels & Cattery shouldn't leave animals locked up in the kennels.
Thousands of animals, pets, livestock and native animals, that are too badly burnt to recover, were euthanized. Real tragedy and natural disaster.

Animae C (508)
Thursday January 8, 2015, 3:10 am

40 perished & 45 were saved
by (CFS) FIRE FIGHTERS & VOLUNTEERS the next day because the owners evacuated the property & left the animals locked in cages.

There has to be an inquiry.

This kennel was in a very high bush fire risk area, they should've had a bushfire plan in place.
