They conveniently forgot to mention the number one cause of algae blooms!!

NUTRIENTS from fertilisers ;
Nutrients promote and support the growth of algae and Cyanobacteria. The eutrophication (nutrient enrichment) of waterways is considered as a major factor. The main nutrients contributing to eutrophication are phosphorus and nitrogen.

In the landscape, runoff and soil erosion from fertilized agricultural areas and lawns, erosion from river banks, river beds, land clearing (deforestation), and sewage effluent are the major sources of phosphorus and nitrogen entering water ways. All of these are considered as external sources.

Internal origin of nutrients comes from the lake/reservoir sediments. Phosphate attaches to sediments. When dissolved oxygen concentration is low in the water (anoxic), sediments release phosphate into the water column. This phenomenon encourages the growth of algae.

AND they having been selling too much water to big corp cotton farmers!!!!
🤬 😠 😡

Winn, does the word "RAPE!" ring a bell?
It is sad to see how much huge, negative, influence presumably duly elected* individuals can have!! Over here, Trump is continuing his demagogic ways, and Florida's former Gov. Scott is gifted with a seat in the federal senate!! Evangelical think Trump has been sent by their god, to be king! Idiocy reigns!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for informing us about this problem, Animae, It's similar to toxic fertilizer runoffs in Florida and elsewhere. Let's hope those in-denial politicians are sorry after Australia's May elections.

I love how our governments blame these blooms on flooding and other weather without mentioning all the pollutants that cause the problem.

The Federal Department of Environment and Energy said the crippling drought conditions in the area had affected water temperatures in the river and sparked the algal bloom, but people blame the disaster on Government mismanagement of the river. The Murray-Darling Basin Authority has been missing in action amid allegations of water theft.

Too much water is being extracted. A combination of water-thirsty corporate irrigators upstream who havn't played by the rules, mis-management of Medindee Lakes, agreements in the Murray Darling basin plan not stuck to, and fertiliser run-off are all contributors to this catastrophe. We need an emergency task force and a federal Royal Commission, not more enquiries.

Contractors called in to dispose of up to a million dead fish have a window of only four days before the carcasses trigger a second wave of deaths and are preparing to clean up a 40-kilometre stretch of the Darling River at Menindee, near Broken Hill. Tragically the most likely effect of those fish corpses which contain nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus breaking down would be to lead to the same low oxygen concentration that killed the fish in the first place, triggering another algal bloom.
Unfortunately another kill is likely anyway as very hot conditions are forecast over the coming days, as warm water results in reduced levels of dissolved oxygen available for fish, The mercury is expected to reach up to 46 degrees Celsius in the town of Menindee this week.

"Around two Sydney Harbours worth of water has been taken out of the Menindee Lakes in the last couple of years", a spokesman from a researcher at Australia Institute reported, and "The mismanagement of water to large agribusinesses is the cause of the mass fish kill and not the drought."

The residents of Medindee are unable to use the river water for drinking and showering and many native animals and birds have already died as the water in the river is toxic to them.
