Every year in African cities thousands of families are thrown out of their homes without human rights safeguards. People living in informal settlements, or 'slums', are most at risk because they may lack formal permission for the place they live.

The sadness of this is the irony . Because they didn't ask permission to live where they live, many are asked to leave their homes.I don't know the proper channels a family needs to go through in order to live in a home.
BUT, doesn't the fact they pay taxes, and vote give them claim to the home?

Sorry, but I cannot worry about Africa anymore! There are enough probelms here in the USA! we have to worry about getting it right here in our own continent before helping others. Not trying to be mean, but our family has been hit with hard times?

This is typical when a nomadic culture that traditionally moves through tribal lands meets up with an urban culture that forces the nomads to join the cities. The nomads have little concept of property rights and consider any unused land as available to build a hut on, while urban citizens own individual land plots rather than a place in a tribe that stays but a year in their village before abandoning it to fallow for a future return and re-use. Both cultures are valid...

signed and noted. Unfortunately this has been going on for many years in many countries. The most notable was the forced relocation of the Chagos Islanders (Indian Ocean) relocation . The UK signed over a lease for a country which was not even theirs to the USA for a military base. And the story goes on and on. When you are poor there is no justice and you have no protection. This alone indicates that we cannot call ourselves civilized.

This is just so WRONG--everyone needs, and deserves, a place they can take their loved ones and be assured of safety and security!
Thank you for this post, Nancy--signed and shared on fb.

I understand what you mean Janet. My mom always said, we need help here first. I do believe that on one hand. But on the other hand, we all live a more globally aware existence now, and are only as strong as our weakest link. All weak links worldwide toward basic human rights for all strengthens the greater good roots. Clean water, nutritional food and decent sanitation are the least every human should be granted.
