Signed and spread! How can one hold a patent on human genes?! How far are they willing to go for just a bit of profit?!?!

I've been partially down that alley and can imagine how this woman feels. What worries me is the fact that a court goes along with their request!! Are they out of their minds???

If one believes in the concept of God than he/she would be the only one having a right to any patent ...

It reminds me of that wonderful letter of Chief Seathl ...
"But how can you buy or sell the sky? the land? The idea is strange to us. If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them? "
The same applies to genes ....

But Industry believes that money allows buying anything and everything.

It is a sorry world in which a victim/survivor of cancer loses a court case against the indifference of corporate thinking
Thanks Nancy - yes, signed .. & thanks Eleonora for sharing this

Noted and Signed. I wish they gave the option if you had a friend/friends who had breast cancer. Thankfully nobody in my family has been touched by this but I have had two close friends diagnosed at a relatively young age.
Thank you Nancy for posting.

Cancer and diabetes are the two big money makers in the pharmaceutical companies and the doctors. I have confirmed with my doctors and health books. Eat almonds. I eat about 5 almonds a day and I am in the best of health. I'm in my 70s and I stay healthy by staying away from doctors.

My insurance company insisted on sending out a doctor to me since I wouldn't go to them. Doctor exclaimed over my health and assured me that, yes, "eat almonds". He told me of a movie star who went to Mexico to get the cure for cancer. They fed him almonds. Cancer went away.

The natural health books confirm this.

Me, I stay away from doctors and I GO NATURAL.

Of course, the way our environment is poisoned, no telling how long ANYTHING will keep us alive and healthy. That may be a matter of days long gone. Probably not. These are End Days and we probably won't be here in a distant future....or perhaps Jesus will be back tonight.

>A biotech corporation just fought a breast cancer survivor in court -- and won the right to profit off human genes that could save the lives of millions living with cancer.
I'm a bit confused. So, the biotech corporation has "genes that could save the lives of millions?" So why would anyone want that company to fail? Don't people want that company to "save the lives of millions living with cancer?" Think of the millions dying of cancer. They might want to be saved.

>This court ruling will impact people all over the world battling cancer -- and could set cancer research back years.
Well, if this court ruling doesn't set cancer research back years, then ruining this company and demonstrating that cancer research only leads to penalties will almost certainly lead to setting cancer research back years, if not decades. Is that really what people want?

>With global cancer rates on the rise, we need to be fighting for prevention,
This appears to be an error as global cancer rates are actually dropping.

>This court decision actually means that corporations can own our genes.
Actually, this decision is not unique. The precedent has already been set.

>Please join me in telling Myriad Genetics to stop trying to profit off breast cancer victims...
stop them from doing research...stop them from finding treatments, even cures.

>Together, we can force Myriad to back down now...
and stop all research and thus millions will go without new treatments that could be developed...millions will live with cancer and millions will die from cancer.

Hi Brian - at first glance you do have a point. But the bone to pick on is not the fact that the company has genes which could help cancer patients. By all means they should put them to good use and work TOGETHER with other research facilities. If such were the case I would be one of the first ones to stand up FOR the company as I've been visited by that beast too in the past.

The point I and obviously so many signatories are against is that the company won the right to PATENT that gene. I don't need to explain to you what this means in legal and commercial terms and interpretations.

THAT in my opinion is a no-go.

On a second thought ... should I patent my blood because I have rare sub-groups?! Sure not - instead I faithfully used to donate my blood to the blood banks every 3 1/2 months until the age of 54 when I got a heart attack. I still donate just for them to use my platelets at least.

Speaking of which ... why don't you all consider donating regularly your blood to the nearest blood bank, hospital or Red Cross facility (if they accept)? Other than saving lives it gives you a free blood test on regular basis - LOL - just as a little incentive ...

Stay safe!

I am sick and tired of corporations profitting at the expense of people. This cannot be permitted to continue. Corporations should operate with the permission and for the benefit of human beings.

These corporations have to be stopped from owning our genes. Many of the pharmaceuticals giants CEOS have owned to the fact that there job is not to cure cancer, but to manage it. So will for the entirety of lives our heath dependent on spending money and buying their drugs which are patented. There is no free health care. Obviously in this world, we get poisoned by the corporations what we eat and then we have to pay to stay alive. I shudder at what we have come to.

To Helen - perfect comment. See also the book by William Engdahl "Seeds of Destruction" which tells the horror story of GMO. "Control the food and you control the people" is the mantra of socio-political American elite which seeks to establish its control over the very basis of human survival, the provision of our daily bread. (paraphrased from the back cover of the book.)

The same applies IMO to our health care which you described perfectly. It is an undisputed fact (among many researchers and doctors) that quite a number of real cures are or could be available ... but there's no interest in cures but rather in endless treatment.

As usual - we, the people, pay the heavy price!
