I also read about this on Daily Kos and the coroner's verdict was a disgrace. Thanks for posting, this news more attention.

I wondered too. The Daily Kos diarist was outraged that an article about a Kentucky sheriff who used the n-word to the faces of accident victims got more recommendations than this article did. Actually both stories are outrageous. I don't suppose there is a petition on this one?

I am quite frankly embarrassed of how some members of my country would not be out of place during the Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, or before the Civil Rights Act. These people are also the first to scream about how they are being oppressed, affirmative action, and call anyone who dares to bring up the very obvious fact that the United States still has a problem with racism a racist.

I can only hope if I have children someday, they don't have to put up with half as much insanity as I have seen since Obama was elected and reelected. Obviously, I don't think Obama has anything to do with this particular case. I"m just saying. We have a longgg way to go before we reach MLK's mountaintop

In my eyes the case isn't closed. I hope that someone will do more to find the evil one who did it. May they rot in hel* when they are found. Thanks Nancy

as long as the media is dominated by the likes of Rupert Murdoch these news will be swept Under the carpet, as are news about the genocides taking place in Tibet, Chechnya, South Sudan and many other places

In fact there is a petition on this one Joanne.....
We want the case referring to 17 year old Lennon Lacy reopened and under new investigators

To much of this going on and it needs to end. But as long as we have leadership in DC that is not standing up to it since President Obama got into office, in fact some of them even encouraging it, then this will continue on. The people of all heritages and colors must speak out against this.

"I have lived in and loved North Carolina. The military brought me there but I was a property owner too. This is not reflective of the North Carolina I loved. Don't try to sweep it under the rug. All America is watching."

You are welcome. This isn't a certainty Roslyn, that is why a full investigation needs to happen. But it doesn't look how the police stated it was the first go round.

Thanks, Nancy for posting, and Dandelion for posting the link to the petition. I signed and shared on Facebook. This is a disgrace to NC, that the death of a child can be shuffled aside, with a doubtful coroner's decision and no investigation.

Message to NC law enforcement: Right now you are being labelled as racist pigs and are creating a major issue. If you do not get to the bottom of this death, you deserve the label and all the grief that comes with it. Give the public some answers.

Sounds as though this NC police department ignored a lot of normal protocol to rush through a conclusion of suicide without bothering to investigate at all.

Racism is still alive & thriving in the US, but that we know all too well, what with all the murders of young African-Americans whether by the police or racist civilians that haven't stopped making the headlines for months, if not years. And all the wrongfully convicted that we read about, released & exonerated after 10, 20, 30 years behind bars, often on death row!

From the posted article: "The shoes on his feet did not belong to him and were two sizes to small. Abrasions and lumps marred his body and face. According to police, these injuries were caused by ants but the undertaker who embalmed the body said they were reminiscent of damage sustained in bar fights. Despite these red flags, the coroner quickly ruled Lacy's death a suicide."

In their 15 October 2014 article on the NC police's suspicious handling of Lennon Lacy's death, the UK Guardian reports that the autopsy report, which lists every single article of clothing he was wearing, "gives no mention of any shoes. The Lacy family was told by investigators that his body was found with a pair of white sneakers without shoelaces which relatives did not recognise, while the new pair of Jordan basketball shoes he bought shortly before his death have gone missing."

In the Guardian's 19 November 2014 article devoted to the Lennon Lacy case, they report: "He was found hanging just a short walk away from his home hours before he was set to appear in a high school football game for which he had been training for months." And...

"Lennon Lacy was in a relationship with a white woman who lived over the road from him at the time, or shortly before, he died. “He did have an interracial relationship and attended an interracial church and people in that community raised their dislike of that,” Barber said. (Reverend William Barber, president of the North Carolina branch of the NAACP) The NAACP letter to Walker also refers to a possible “race-based animus toward Lennon and his family by some of their neighbours”." ...The North Carolina branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) spent almost two hours on Tuesday (18 Nov) with US attorney Thomas Walker in his Raleigh office. The NAACP handed the federal prosecutor a letter formally asking the FBI to join the investigation. The association also presented the prosecutor with a file of more than 20 leads that it believes casts doubt on the suggestion that the 17-year-old high school football player killed himself."
.....................................................................................................................................

I recommend listening to Bryan Stevenson, an African-American defense lawyer, whose background & experience make him particularly well suited to discussing racism in the US. He is the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, a group based in Alabama that represents some of this country’s most marginalized people-- the poor and the wrongfully convicted. Stevenson has won relief for dozens of condemned prisoners and argued before the U.S. Supreme Court six times. In 2012, he won a landmark Supreme Court case that barred states from giving mandatory life sentences without parole to children. The Nobel Prize-winning South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu has called Stevenson "America’s young Mandela." :

About the petition Dandelion linked to: I'm horrified that only 1 531 people have signed, whereas 969 signatures are still needed!

I'm going to fwd this post to my network; I don't have hundreds of friends, and some of them have already noted your post, Nancy, but I'll do what I can to get more signatures for Lennon & his family.

One thing I know for certain is, if it isn't National news,
