Save the Round Table Island - Rhône (69)

Collective of citizens and ecologists of the banks of the Rhone has started this Petition to: Prefect of the Rhone and the Auvergne Rhone Alpes region Stephane BOUILLON and to 11 more

Round Table Island is the largest alluvial forest in one piece in south-eastern France. It is a green setting south of the Metropole de Lyon, along the valley of chemistry. Since 1999, under the impetus of the inhabitants, public authorities and local authorities, for the first time in Europe, have joined forces to restore a space of life and nature to a portion of the Rhone River.

An exceptional biodiversity, mammals (otter, beaver) with rare plants (orchids), has gradually regained its rights in this protected space UNIQUE ... making these wet alluvial environments an exceptional natural space.

Problem: close to this natural setting, the technological risks, linked to industrial and chemical activities, require the displacement, among other things, of a nursery of 20 hectares, to avoid the exposure of its personnel (PPRT Valley of the Chemistry, one of the largest in France that integrates the risks generated by 10 SEVESO sites).

The solution of ease and speed, retained by the services of the prefecture and the Metropolis, consists of implanting the nursery a little further south on both sides of the road connecting the two bridges of Vernaison and Solaize. The implementation will be on land reserves, on the same site where our taxes have been fully used to allow the forest to flourish. Again, in 1992, the prefect of the Rhône explained to other developers the impossibility of installation (flood risk, in particular) on this space.

How to imagine ecological compensation, made compulsory by law, of several hectares of centennial alluvial forest and wetlands? No ecologist would take the gamble to achieve it. However, an impact study has been commissioned and has not yet been made public.
We refuse that the local populations are deprived of a space of stroll and discovery (about 50 000 visitors in the year). We refuse to deprive children of a privileged environment education, the first site of the department in this area (many school trips are organized). Most of these activities are organized by the SMIRIL (mixed syndicate of the Rhone Islands and Lônes), consisting of the communes of Feyzin, Grigny, Irigny, Millery, Serezin du Rhone, Ternay and Vernaison and the Metropole de Lyon. Are our elected officials aware that they are torpedoing the activities of their mixed union whose missions are to pilot and implement the project of rehabilitation and enhancement of the Nature Area of the Islands and Lônes du Rhône?

In the face of the emergency, let's mobilize to save this natural space of proximity!
Before it is too late, we, inhabitants of the banks of the Rhone, we ask
the elected local residents, the Lyon Metropolis and the Préfet du Rhône:

To seriously study other relocation sites at Chapelan Nursery.
That the impact study on natural areas be made public.
That the impact study on the activities of SMIRIL be made public.
