Native Americans were often, in the past, BANNED from National Parks that USED TO BE their homes!
There was this idea of "pure Nature", "untouched by Man".
Also, rich white guys wanted Hunting Preserves just for THEM....

I REMEMBER CLEARLY - half a century ago! - when in National Parks literature it used to say things like, "The Indians FEARED THIS PLACE because of their SUPERSTITIONS...they avoided it, never came here."
That is PURE BULLSCHEISS. PURE.
It is a COVER UP for EXPELLING THE INDIANS RUTHLESSLY so they could get White Tourists to come, and build Big Hotels, etc.... It was the RAILROADS that promoted and made money from the National Parks... they produced some quite beautiful, collectible posters!
But, that stuff about the "Superstitious Fearful Indians" - I TOOK IT FOR GRANTED AT THE TIME, that it was true, I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER..... But this was the sort of VICIOUS DEMEANING PROPAGANDA that was all around....

Signed.....and thank you BMutiny for offering up more truth. Mt Rushmore was placed in a very sacred place of the Great Sioux Nation. Those carved heads are of people that stole native people's lands and did all sorts of terrible things to native people.

I don't think anyone would like their Church or special area to be invaded and then have the person's face enshrined there that stole your home or murdered your children. These things are not taught in school and therefore people just don't question it because they simply don't know many times; however the natives do.

Quoting MYSELF here:
'I REMEMBER CLEARLY - half a century ago! - when in National Parks literature it used to say things like, "The Indians FEARED THIS PLACE because of their SUPERSTITIONS...they avoided it, never came here."
That is PURE BULLSCHEISS. PURE.'

And then - I ALSO remember! - there was the "Evil Spirits" nonsense. Remember, THIS WAS ON OFFICIAL LITERATURE HANDED OUT BY THE NATIONAL PARKS. "The local Indians avoided this place, because they believed EVIL SPIRITS lived here!"
This was between half- and three-quarters of a century ago, THAT I MYSELF AM OLD ENUF TO REMEMBER. [I don't know when it started, but probably right from the beginning of there being any National Parks Literature.] I didn't know anything, I was a kid and the adults didn't say anything, sorry to tell you I BELIEVED THIS BILGE, believed I was being told TRUE HISTORY. [And I was very interested in History!]

Gee, funny thing, the "Superstitious, Fearful Indians" always believed those darned "Evil Spirits" hung out at the Popular Tourist Attractions! Like at Yellowstone, etc.....
This of course served SEVERAL purposes:
For one thing, NO GUILT FEELINGS about the Indians being displaced, heck if they stayed away ANYway because of the "Evil Spirits"....
Of course, many of these "unusual" places, Natural Wonders, could have been SACRED to the Native Americans, also. Perhaps reserved, set aside for special occasions, for special people or types of ceremonies. But, of course, this is "Superstition" and "EVIL SPIRITS" [not good ones!] because THEY AIN'T CHRISTIANS... so OF COURSE it's NOT Real "Sacredness"....

The other thing, besides the DIRTY TRUTH about FORCIBLY EXPELLING the Native Americans from National Parks lands,
is to give the Tourists the CAREFULLY ORCHESTRATED IMPRESSION that what they are seeing is "RAW NATURE WITHOUT THE HAND OF MAN".
This is what the Railroads and Tourist Posters, and Hotels, are SELLING. ADVERTISING.
Of course, Native Americans for centuries, DID SHAPE THE LANDSCAPE in many ways, such as burning undergrowth to encourage certain KINDS of plants growing, etc.
But without the "unsightly" and by-now-impoverished Native settlements, these - truly magnificent! - landscapes could be sold to the refugees-from-over-populated-Europe, as if they were "The First To Set Foot" on them, DISCOVERING them, Invading "Virgin Land" [and the Metaphor IS APT].

This way, the White People could feel they OWNED the land and had the ONLY Right to be there, since "WE'RE SMART, WE'RE CHRISTIANS, WE'RE NOT SCARED OF THE 'EVIL SPIRITS' LIKE THOSE POOR BENIGHTED NATIVES WERE.... WE BELONG HERE. THEY NEVER, NEVER DID."

Folks, pardon me, I know it's really NOT my fault - but I can't help HITTING MYSELF [metaphorically, don't worry!], HITTING MYSELF that I ACTUALLY FOR A LOOOOONG TIME - BELIEVED THAT CRAP! I DID! And so did just about EVERYbody...... [But that's no excuse!]
