'A Living Hell' for Disabled Slaves on South Korean Islands

World  (tags: South Korean islands, slavery, disabled slaves, sea salt farms )

Far from the glittering steel-and-glass capital of Seoul, they were now hunted men on this remote island where the enslavement of disabled salt farm workers is an open secret.

Despicable...but there's millions of slaves suffering around the globe--even in wealthy civilized nations. So disheartening seeing how man treats fellow man--we're barbarians. Thanks Judy

No wonder over time I prefer the company of animals.
This is very sad and there should be no excuse for people treating people like that. It's sickening and makes me ashamed to be part of the human race.
Thank you Judy

Good on the authorities who are trying to control and litigate in this situation. Still, years of abuse have a lasting effect and no compensation can retrieve the former persona. Disabilities and minor crimes need to be addressed worldwide. Slavery and trafficking is highly addressed by Walk Free.

Thanks everyone. This type of situation does occur a lot more than most people would ever suspect. Nancy points out the important work of Walk Free, which you can find at

Thank you to Rose and Vivien, who do a great job of keeping the issue of all types of slavery prominent on Care2.
