All attempts to reform mass incarceration through the traditional mechanisms of electoral politics, the courts and state and federal legislatures are useless. Until we hit corporations in the pocket they wonâEUR(TM)t listen.

First we need to take back our government or it'll be the same old, same old. Thanks Judy.

There is the possibility of some bipartisan help on this one with reductions in prison population (Newt is among the GOP involved). CA built most of their new prisons in the 1980's and 1990's in small cities or towns so the prison became the largest employer in town. Then most of health care got contracted out...then, continuing to refuse to do what the court recommended, Arnie sent some to private prisons out of state (it was said he was an investor in the company)...also, if government stopped guaranteeing payments for a specified number no matter what the real numbers is in the contracts...

Thanks everyone. I do hope people notice the list of corporations Hedges mentions in the article. It gives us a place to start.

Newt has occasional flashes of lucidity that shine through the GOP BS. I'm glad this is one of them and glad to hear he is acting on it.

Noted. Thanks, Judy. Really glad to see this protest. It's a LOT of big corporations to target, but with social media this could happen fast. There are also many groups working together on this, another part of a formula for success. The private prison corporations are going to push back, especially with the possibility of Pres. Obama pardoning many non-violent drug offenders and releasing them. We are going to absolutely need a big jobs program. Funding infrastructure improvement would be a wonderful bill for Congress to pass.

It's so true that we will need a big jobs program, bigger than ever before if non-violent drug offenders are pardoned, as Lois says. A huge infrastructure improvement program would certainly be a good idea. I had thought Obama would have done that ages ago. That seemed like something he would and should have doe when he came into office. Let's hope he does it now.

Privatizing prisons should be an act of treason against our Democracy.
