The Council urged the United States on Tuesday to allow NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden to return home and make the case that his actions had positive effects.

From the article:

The call for Snowden to be allowed a “public interest defense” — something not available to whistleblowers charged under the Espionage Act of 1917, as Snowden has been — was part of a resolution to improve international protections for whistleblowers passed overwhelmingly by the 47-nation council’s parliamentary assembly at its meeting in Strasbourg, France.

After the vote, Snowden spoke to the assembly by video from Moscow, where he has temporary asylum. “It would be committing a crime by discussing your defense,” Snowden said of his current legal prospects if he returned to the U.S.

This is my comment :

Ed Snowden comes on after 39:45 on the video, if you choose to click on the link at the end of the article. The video is the conference opening at the Council of Europe. I agree, Mitchell this is interesting. I also think this defense of whistleblowing is a valid, and excellent idea.

He should have a fair trial!

He should have a fair trial. I still somehow doubt, given precedent, that the "public interest defence" would be terribly effective. previous time the nature of U.S. signals-interception was published, Osama bin Laden and company learned how to stop all of their orders and other communications from getting intercepted. That was when al Qaeda began conducting successful operations and became dangerous. On top of that, the "security through obscurity" approach and Snowden's knowledge of it should set the bar very high for such a defence.

Snowden is a hero, and should not even have to go through a trial. We need more people like him to speak up about all the lies which we are being told.
Thank you.

He should get a fair trial certainly.

He is not a hero though ...

Noted. Thanks, Judy.
Birgit said it very well above. Because of this, I hope it will be possible for Snowden to leave Russia soon and take up residence in his European country of choice at least. I don't think it will be possible for him to return to the U.S. without facing charges and ending up like Chelsea Manning. Yes, he is a heroic whistleblower.

I would hope that he would take up residence in a European country. I doubt that the US will change. I proved in my letters to the fed govt that my former husband's family and his widow ..not myself ....kept a secret for the US Govt and I DID NOT KNOW FOR 17 YEARS...AFTER I CHALLENGED THE FBI AND GOVT ABOUT HIS DEATH/WRONGFUL DEATH....FOR WHICH HIS WIDOW RECEIVED LIFE INSURANCE AND SURVIVORS BENEFITS FOR AND FOR WHICH HIS WIDOW ,,NOT ME.,,AND HIS FAMILY LIED FOR THE GOVT AND TO ME FOR 17 YEARS...WELL I HAVE BEEN TRASHED, LIED ABOUT HARASSED, KICKED IN THE CHEST, HIT BY A CAR AND STALKED AND RAPED BY SOME DIRTY COP / MEDIUM FOR YEARS I AM SICK OF THIS GOVT AND I DO NOT CARE WHAT HAPPENS TO THIS COUNTRY. EVEN A SAUDI LEADER SAID THE USA WAS PLAYING A BAD PSYCHO GAME..AND I AM NOT A PART OF THE USA PSYCHO GAME AND I WILL PASS A LIE DETECTOR TEST....OF COURSE WHEN I ASKED THE FBI FOR A LIE DETECTOR TEST....TO PROVE THEIR LIES...NO ANSWER FORTHCOMING.......SO SNOWDEN WOULD NOT BE IN FOR A PERFECT LIFE EITHER AND BECAUSE HE IS A MAN HE SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN MORE PREFERENCE THAN A WOMAN LIKE MYSELF WHO WAS AN EYE WITNESS TO GOVT CRIMES........AND SAID SO YEAR BEFORE MANY KNEW..........................

Unfortunately I do not believe that Snowden would get a fair trial. There should not be a trial at all. He has done the whole world a favor. Wasn´t there a time that "whistle blowers" were appreciated and eventually credited for advancement achieved through their well thought out actions ? His actions are only possible because those who need to know, are not listening, don´t take the time to listen. Everyone needs to have some kind of access to the decision maker(s), then this would not have happened. - Chelsea Manning also tried to get the complaint to the right person(s) and was (as per report) shunned off - again and again. Thus the government´s people are not acting FOR THE PEOPLE, there are too many who think they have the ultimate sayso, and screw it all up, with the excuse "I only did my job, only did what I was told".
