Buck was a regal fellow with an impressive rack, but after his arthritis medication and kidneys quit working, Oregon Zoo veterinarians euthanized the 19-year-old Roosevelt elk this month. The zoo announced his death Friday afternoon.

Thank you for the beautiful picture of a beautiful animal. He must have been well taken care of to have lived so long.

It sounds like Buck had a good long life and he was put to sleep peacefully after having major health issues.. I'm sure that since he was the only elk left he was lonely but well taken care of so RIP you beautiful boy.

Magnificent animal! He must have been on the lonely side, being the only one left, but 19 years at least sounds like a decent lifetime (as opposed to Knut, who was only 4). And yes, Holly, very glad he was put to sleep peacefully when his kidneys gave in, instead of having to suffer!

Sometimes it is the hardest decisions that are the most important. At least his passing would have been peaceful.
