But nearly 50 colleges in the United States, including the University of Richmond, still maintain dirty, coal-fired power plants that poison the air and threaten public health.

Schools that have shut down their campus coal plants or committed to doing so in recent years include Cornell University, Ball State University and my Alma mater Miami University. Students and community members won those victories by launching petitions, meeting with university administrators and using other tactics to build public pressure on the schools to do the right thing.

Students at the University of Richmond have been escalating their campaign this fall using similar tactics. In recent months more than 1/3 of the school's students have signed a petition to President Ayers telling him to shut the campus coal plant down.1

A few weeks ago, several students met with President Ayers and gave him the student petitions. He promised to bring them to the Board of Trustees which is a good step forward but he refused to commit to anything more.

Wasn't sure about the link -- it said my signature had been submitted, but never asked for my information -- so, for others who are unsure, I was able to sign at the following link:

Signed and because I am signed in to Credo this is often the way your signature is recognized. We have so many ready to use options to coal and oil/gas that we need only step forward and rid ourselves of that which is slowly killing this planet.

Petition signed.

Coal technology is an outdated source for energy needs. Coal is a very heavy polluter
and effects the health of people.

Ty, Phyllis.
