Target: Zoo Directors Nationwide

Goal: End irresponsible, inhumane elephant breeding programs.

A recent in utero death of an elephant calf at the Memphis Zoo in Tennessee brings to light the irresponsible and inhumane practice of elephant breeding in captivity. Gina, the mother, is still carrying the unborn fetus, which may threaten her life. The first birth at this zoo also ended in tragedy in 2009, when a mother killed her day-old calf.

Conditions in zoos are often inadequate for breeding of elephants. Lack of space for exercise, stress, and adverse birthing conditions, including isolation and chaining of laboring elephants, contribute to high rates of birth complications, including the death of the mother.

Since 2000, at least 25 elephant pregnancies have ended in complications including stillbirth, death of the calf during labor, euthanasia of a premature calf, failure to thrive, death of a mother, and infanticide. The infant mortality rate in U.S. zoos is four times higher than that of documented free-ranging populations in Asia and Africa.

Elephants in captivity endure a slew of problems not seen in free-ranging populations. In addition to birthing complications, they are observed having abnormal repetitive behaviors, crippling arthritis, and foot disease. A study in the journal Science revealed that elephants in captivity have far shorter life spans than those in the wild. Breeding elephants has nothing to do with conservation since elephants born in captivity will never be returned to the wild.

Elephant breeding programs in zoos are dangerous, inhumane, and irresponsible. Elephants in zoos, particularly pregnant mothers, are suffering from complications at far higher rates than they would in the wild. Tell zoos to prioritize elephant welfare by putting an end to their elephant breeding programs.

There's no reason zoos cannot have the best of care and facilities for their pregnant elephants--there's no excuse for this at all!
Noted and signed--thanks for bringing it to our attention Jim.

Your signature has been recorded - signed. Though Iam always concerned when I see a generalized TARGET for a petition. I would prefer to have a list of zoos that are known to have caused this problem directly and with knowledge of committing an inhumane act.

Two more signatures! Elephants and all animals shouldn't be forced to live in tiny "enclosures" their entire lives and forced to endure the agony to their bodies and minds that results. This is despicable.

If humans were treated like this then there would be a huge international outcry. Because these are "just" elephants they don't count. It is important that elephants do breed in zoos and reserves but with dignity and care. Elephants withdraw with one friend to give birth. Too many zoos fail to understand an animals needs and to provide what is necessary.

animals in captivity are always miserable, no matter how 'natural' humans try to duplicate their real habitat.
under these conditions, how can they have a 'normal' birth? zoos should not even exist, but since they do, forced breeding by irresponsible and uncaring humans must end now! as we see, it is dangerous and fatal for both mother and baby. we don't need elephant breeding programs . we need to take care of the animals who have been captured and forced to endure a life behind bars. thank you, jim

This is an irresponsible, knee-jerk petition created by people who don't understand how important captive breeding programs are and how they're administered.

If you have any interest in actually learning something about them...send me a message & I'll explain.

If I have any credibility as a 20-year zoo educator, you might stop to consider signing this petition. It's junk.

Elephants have one purpose in America, to bring in money at their expense. There is one purpose for breeding them in America. To sell them for a profit. The babies don't stay with their mothers as they would in their own habitat. Most elephant sympathizers know that when forcing breeding, it is for an ulterior motive that will make the mama and baby unhappy. As a former circus dancer, I came to realize that it's time to let elephants have their lives back. We must speak up for elephants in every way possible, they want to be left alone w/their families.

A zoo is too small for an elephant breeding program. Protect the ones that get killed in Africa somewhere. 200 elephats got killed in one week. Humans should stop breeding to make space for the wild.

Poor Elies, they are always getting the short end of the stick, in actual fact we should be protecting these magnificent beings with everything we have. We should end how they are suffering from poachers in the wild in Africa and Asia instead of breeding more Zoo Elephants.

Yes, stop the breeding programs. They are a waste of funds and will do nothing to save the elephant from extinction in the next one hundred years. DNA samples should be gathered and sent to "Doomsday banks" where, if anyone survives, perhaps at some point in the future...elephants may be reintroduced to nature.
