One Day of Peace....September 21st

Here's a crazy idea: Persuade the world to try living in peace for just one day, every September 21. In this energetic, honest talk, Jeremy Gilley tells the story of how this crazy idea became real enough to help millions of kids in war-torn regions.

This poem was written by a child through the Poems for Peace in Our World • School and Classroom Program. I had it on the message that was sent to all my connected friends along with the video above. This man has done a wonderful thing, but we can all do something, even this child below has sent upon the Winds and the Spider Web a poem from the heart.

I Dream of a World of Peace

I dream of a world of peace,
Where people can live a life of ease.
World where there is no difference between rich and poor,
Life being pleasant for living ever more.
I dream of a world of happiness,
Where there is no sight of selfishness.
Where each and everyone can get their needs,
And have belief in their deeds.
I dream of a world of kindness,
Where people can know that value of love is priceless.
Where people could realize that of earth we are all
And to have a kind heart is better for all men.
I dream of a world of loving mates,
Where people can realize all are great.
Where people can know that in this earth,
With a kind heart people must give birth.
I dream of a world of peace,
Where people can live a life of ease!

We all have Power.....We can All be the Change we want to see.
A common phrase but has power, Peace Begins With Me.

I love this idea. I see the world peaceful, with all people waking up to remember who we really are, souls who chose to have this crazy experience in duality. Before I go Home, I will do my utmost to usher in my vision together with all who are also on board with their own visions, and together we can do it. We are so much more powerful than we have been indoctrinated to believe!

Peace starts with yourself within! Give Peace a chance. Stop killing innocent people in wars for the greed of a few. The world can live in peace & be Paradise. We all want it this way. Thanks Dandelion.

Great, thanks. All starts with each individual, everything begins from and extends from each individual. There can always be reasons to hate, but to love in spite of all reasons not to love, would bring more peace.

It's a great idea, but there will always be those who will want to spoil the party for their own greed or power. This 1 to 5% of the population do not care about anyone else but themselves. I do pray for peace on earth. So, we can have this happen in parts of the world. for sure.

Care2 has shown me that we all want the same. The people want it! But I could see it being another Big Sales Day and you can't have Peace if people are camping out for days to be the first to get that one sale item. Thanksgiving and Christmas are a great example of what would happen on a Day of Peace!

Sorry to say, but, I don't think that it can be done

Thanks, Sheryl . . . It really IS possible. Many countries have gone decades without contributing to wars (either monetarily or by contributing the lives of their youngest, and most promising, next generation) and have pledged to only use those resources -- the preservation of lives and the quality thereof -- if their sovereignty is threatened on their own soil.

The difference in country mentality? Some countries value life, equality and the welfare of their citizens more than greed.

Incitement to Disobedience

I wish that I were able to incite
Young men in every land to disobey
For wars will cease when men refuse to fight.

To kill our brothers for a nations right
Is not a method we can use today.
I wish that I were able to incite.

When leaders threaten to resort to might,
I know that idols all have feet of clay.
For wars will cease when men refuse to fight.

The cause of peace is shared by black and white
And freedom fighters show a better way.
I wish that I were able to incite.

Non-violent resistance has no bite
While undecided pacifists delay.
For wars will cease when men refuse to fight.

With power to reinforce in what I write
The things that protest-singers try to say,
I wish that I were able to incite

For wars will cease when men refuse to fight.

Russell within the video he explains that ALL the Nations in the world did agree to the one day of peace and most actually did it.

As part of their 2007 mission to Afghanistan, Jeremy and Jude travelled to Jalalabad and Kabul. They met with many representatives from the UN, the Afghan government and local NGOs, as well as school children and a US army reconstruction team.

For Peace Day 2007, WHO and UNICEF, with the Ministry of Public Health, provided 1.4 million children with the monovalent P3 polio vaccine in southern Afghanistan and selected areas in eastern Afghanistan. UNICEF and youth volunteers from the Afghan Red Crescent Society organised a Peace Walk through the streets of Herat, followed by a youth debate on what needs to be done in Afghanistan for peace to work. There were arms handover ceremonies, prayers for peace in mosques, schools painted white and education activities. A large tract of land cleared of mines and ready for cultivation was handed over to the local community.

For Peace Day 2008, there was a 70 per cent drop in security incidents on Peace Day in Afghanistan following pledges by President Karzai and UN forces for a day of non-violence.

UNICEF, WHO and the Ministry of Public Health vaccinated 1.6 million children against polio as part of the Peace Day 2008 campaign.

Ahead of Peace Day 2009, Afghanistan’s Government ordered its forces to stand down. A similar declaration halting offensive operations was made by ISAF. The Taliban agreed to support a Peace Day polio immunisation drive by the Afghan government and UN agencies, by stating that they would not harm or block access to the 14,000 health workers and volunteers involved in the Peace Day campaign.

Almost 1.2 million Afghan children benefited from polio immunisations in eight provinces, including some of the country’s hardest to reach areas such as Kandahar, Uruzgan, and Helmand.

In 2010, The UN in Afghanistan once again led the way, with UNAMA launching its Peace Day campaign on 1st September using mass media spots. With over 70 per cent of Afghanistan’s population under 25 years old, young people were the focus of various activities organised by groups from all sectors of society.

As part of his Peace Day statement, President Hamid Karzai announced that the Government of Afghanistan have established a council for peace aimed at seeking ways for a lasting peace in the country.

In Kabul, a Peace Day festival was set up next to the Tomb of Nadir Shah on a ridge high above the city. There were gatherings of children learning about peace through classes, artwork, music and sport. In a festive mood, children brandished the flags of peace or flew kites to express their hopes. The Ministry of Defense spokesperson Zahir Azimi attended the ceremony.

This is only what ONE Country has done on Peace I would say, it is already being done.

Carole, thank you for your contribution...people always have their doubts that this or that can happen. But if we all put aside our doubts and instead say, why yes, this CAN happen, they we will have more success of bringing forth that which it is we want.

This is what I liked about Jeremy Gilley, he wasn't rich, he had some talent, and he said, why not, if not me, then who. He just went for it, and look at the wonderful things that has come from one man saying, I and we can do this.

Inspiring video.......

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”
~Jimi Hendrix

Why is it that Jimi Hendrix knew so many years ago what our leaders still haven't learned to this date?

“Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.”
~Jimi Hendrix

Say what you want about Jimi, but his genius wasn't limited to the magic he created with a musical instrument.

Thanks for a fantastic post, Dandelion! Not only was it enlightening and hopeful, but it resulted in a lot of insightful and heartfelt comments. You sure do know how to pick 'em!

Roxy, my sweet friend, I happen to LOVE your passion for justice. (*hug*)

I don't ever want to "calm down," but I do understand the necessity of standing back from time to time and regaining my focus, in order to be more effective.

I feel like the young person who wrote the poem. I wish, want, would like. I think of all the issues that prevent such a thing and I wish it could be different for all humans. It is nice to note that there was a time in 2007 when entities agreed and came together to have such a time of peace. Until all the meaness cease it won't happen. It means somebody has to always do the forgiving and never retaliate for injustices. I don't see that happening. I think of the movie BRAVEHEART. All they wanted was to be treated right and fairly from the ruling class at that time. It didn't happen. That movie opened me up to see the repeated conditions of this world/human condition.(The strong take advantage of the week and many go along to get along and the rest suffer. The hero becomes the dead martyr cut up and displayed for the nations to see as an example.
Then there is SPARTUGUS AND FOR WHOM THE BELLS TOLL. It is as simple as doing the right things by each other and treating people as you would want to be treated.
Maybe one day a time of peace will truly come for all of us. Until then we can try and hope in whatever increments we can.
I see children when they are born and as they grow, innocent to the ways of the world. They have goodly characters but because of obht.. the innocent and the goodness .. they are unprepared as to how to respond to the evil and they are destroyed of both. Really no one knows how to respond to the evil and it breaks many people.. cause they are taught the world is good, people are good and don't play the victim. Thus; that cancels out the teaching of the lie about the goodness of the world.
So; I watch I pay attention and I gain understanding and my heart grieves.
Thx for the article and sharing. Thx for allowing me the opportunity to respond.
